why would you change plans, just take extra care with hygiene. We have a trip planed from tassie to alice etc.
as long as we can get on and off the spirit, its all go.

At the end of January, hardly anyone knew about the coronavirus

At the end of February, most people knew about it

Now in the middle of March, a lot of places (in other countries), are in shut down mode
With the leaders in the UK, thinking of telling anyone over 70, to self isolate

I arrived 6 weeks ago in South Africa before this Coronavirus thing really took hold. Up until last week we were lucky not to have any cases of it in this country today there are more than 50 all started by people travelling from Europe. Today I was put into isolation in my little chalet for the next 14 days not because I travelled anywhere but because I picked up a colleague from the airport who had come from Australia. So now I cant go home even if I was able to get a flight back and my wife told me that if I did manage to get back I am going to put into self isolation for another 14 days. All a bit inconvenient  but my real concern is that the public health system in this country is in meltdown (even before the crisis)  normally we get around it by paying cash to enter their private health system which is excellent. If you get Caronavirus here there will be no choice they will send us to the governments designated public hospitals for isolation and treatment.

One of the guys went to the doctor last week with really elevated blood pressure he was admitted to the local private hospital for testing and observation. When he booked in he had to pay R58000 (A$5800) up front , each test they did he had to pay before they would do them, when they discharged him the next morning he was hit with a Drs bill for another R80000 ($8000). 1 night in hospital for observation and a few tests cost him over $15000 so dont leave home without your travel insurance or credit card.

Strop n i like to go to the country around this time for 5 mths.  We have a housesit though this year starting april. People are going to uk. Have not been told any different as yet. We are both in the dangerous zone for age n health So the sooner we get to the open country and away from crowds the better. My concern is we free camp or use showgrounds and most showgrounds  have stay limits and more concerning a thought is they will be shut down. Another concern is doctors closing their books to new patients.

 In some towns now the doctors shut their books to new patients due to the influx of Nomads and others during the winter months so I would certainly be checking with doctors if you consider you may need to call on them.

As for the self imposed isolation that is expected of us, I saw a post on a social media page which although is probably funny, it is also very true.

So the good people self isolate for two weeks then head out again only to have the possibility to mix with infected people who cared less about their own condition...and this will fix things, how???

I think our parliament needs a tie rail for unicorns outside at the steps.

In retail and some other businesses handling money was high risk when it came to the spread of disease but the use of plastic cards has probably cut this risk down in many areas.

Probably pubs and clubs and the dreaded poker machine would still be classed as a bad area. We could all think of many other activities that we need to be careful of.

I was talking to a van park manager yesterday who is in two minds as to what to do when the influx of people begin due to the mass exodus of retirees all head to the north. His wife is particularly concerned of transactions in the office and is worried even now with backpacker visitors. God forbid the spread of any virus during a happy hour session of sharing dips, cakes and any food.

Then when I really think about it, in days gone by we all made sure we did attend to hand and face hygiene and a clean home and ensuring we eat the correct foods which provide the vitamins to help fight any virus and maybe this should be our collective approach today rather than all staying indoors and hoping the virus will go away.

 Just had a discussion on this issue, my neighbour is in a Bridge club, a discussion with picking up food separately or with tongs. The discussion he was having, the other member is a doctor. Everyone using the same tongs is more risky than picking up the food individually.

The bridge club is now shutting down for the forseefores future regardless of food handling!

 

We are in an English country dancing group & have shut down until further notice. Sadly it was keeping our brains active trying to remember the formations which can be quite complex!

 Mike the company I work for has a corporate travel insurance policy and according to the provider we are covered. You may be right about normal travel insurance its certainly a question I would be asking before I went anywhere overseas. I would be thinking seriously about even leaving Australia in this current crisis ar least you know that in Oz there is a good standard of medical care if the worst did happen. The same cannot be said in places like Africa and as the virus spreads the health care systems that they do have will quickly be swamped. Good news is that there is plenty of toilet paper on the shelves =  people here haven,t caught on to the idea that (for some reason) you need to stockpile it ...

Listerine 21.6% alcohol so about $32 per litre if 40% alcohol.

Aldi vodka $30 700ml so $42.86 per litre. Assuming 40% alcohol.

So a bit dearer but you are not doubling up on resources & wasting space.

Was in Victor Harbor SA today. It is near deserted. During the hour I sat in the main Street having lunch only one car drove past and no one walking on the footpaths. All the shops I spoke with are screaming out for customers and seem to be quite despondant about the coming weeks. It seemed weird walking tonight past empty restuarants that are normally quite busy. I am told that no infections have been reported here yet, but that there has been in nearby Yankalilla and also around Mt Barker area. Hope normality returns sooner rather than later. Joe
