I bought a Uniden 5060 recently. It has all the controls in the hand piece and the rest is behind the dash.
I like it.

Anything from Uniden or GME will be OK provided it is 5W and you mount the antennae in the right place.

Hi Paul have had gme for years very compact and they do a great job .mines not much bigger than a cigarette pack has a good range the secret is in the ariel get a good one .

Just a couple of things, work out who is going to use the radio, if its the passenger, you may want to mount it on the LH side, but within reach of the driver, but if the driver only is going to use it, and you are right handed, then mounting the unit so it viewed easily, and the mike is within easy reach on the right hand side will make it easier to use without distracting the driver too much from the driving.
If I had a choice now, I would by a unit like the old ones, a knob for channels, another for volume, I need a science degree to operate ours.

Hi I have a couple of 5w hand held which are very handy. I mostly only listen or talk to trucks that catch me up and need to overtake. The trick drivers are always great and know where they want to pass. Hardly ever get a response from caravaners don't know why they have channel no on back of the van. Cheers Stewart

We had a GME mounted in the 80 series, but that went with the vehicle. So we lashed out on a Uniden Tradies pack at the most recent show in Adelaide. This had 2 hand held's up to 5 watt with a magnetic base external antenna as well. We have them set to 40 for truck comms and scan through a few including ch10, 15, 18 for general road comms. Plus we set them for VOX operation making it easier for reversing etc in van parks or awkward bush spots. Sally does the guidance stuff and is good at letting me know how it is all going.
