This is a question asked on the forum annually.  Mostly the excellent Triple-J boat tour down the Ord River is the most highly recommended & for good reason. We didn't do the Triple J tour as we were lucky enough to befriend a couple with their own comfy boat who took us down the Ord. It is a spectacular trip & added a totally different perspective to our time in Kununurra.

We had some car troubles which saw us 'marooned' in the area for several weeks. It was a cloud with a silver lining however. Had we not have been forced to stay Kununurra would have been 'another town to pass through', as we had done 10 years earlier. Thankfully this time around turned out very differently.

Despite the car troubles, it was still driveable, & we took the opportunity to have an adventure 4wd'ing through station & coastal country up to Cape Domett 150kms north of Kununurra on the Cambridge Gulf. It was a gloriously wild & beautiful place, which we found with guidance/map support from friends who had previously been there. Driving through a 'fairytale-like'  boab forest enroute was special.  Without that guidance reaching the camp spot would have been a gamble, but with good GPS guidance, we only became 'geographically  challenged ' once. :)

It was at Cape Domett on our 2nd or 3rd night there that we met Ian & Michelle Harvey, who arrived having taken a far more circuitous & adventurous route than us. We became for friends, with them 'taking us under their wing' once back in Kununurra where they live. Apart from taking us down the ord in their private boat, Michelle took us bushwalking to some little known waterfall & swimming holes in a gorge not far out of town, but a full morning's return walk from a 4wd accessible parking spot, as well as sharing their home & meals & much enjoyable times sharing travel stories & being given information about many more 'secret' spots in the area which we were able to access later once our car was fully fixed.

These are seriously good people with kind hearts, bursting with passion for exploring their region combined with years of experience of adventurous travel.

Fast forward to the beginning of 2020, it was little surprise to learn that they have finally taken the plunge into business that we & many others had suggested they should, to capitalise on their unique experience, passion & knowledge.  Where their love for the east Kimberley & their active adventurous lifestyle has been incorporated into their everyday means of making a living.

For anyone thinking of visiting Kununurra without a 4wd, & wanting to see some of the special 'off the beaten track" spots that few tourists get to see, with folk you will enjoy being with I thoroughly recommend you to check out this new venture of theirs. They are not 'cowboys', nor 'fly by nighters'. You will be safe, entertained & will experience places otherwise inaccessible to you.
