Another Tartan Rug

As I have previously posted, as we travel, I crochet tartan rugs. On completion, I donate them to a nursing home closest to where the rug was finished.

This year (actually December 2019) my latest rug was completed on Kangaroo Island. On one of the hottest days I have ever lived through, I deliver this to the Kingscote Hospital Nursing home. When I arrived and explained what I wanted to do, I was introduced to "sister" who took me down the hall to the nursing home. She said one of her patients had just complained about being cold, and would I like to give my rug to her personally.

Which I did

I explained to the patient "Val" that I was a grey nomad crocheting my way around Australia, she was so interested, and quite excited that she should be chosen for the latest rug. After a few more minutes chat, I departed - she started crying tears of happiness, and out in the hall way, Mr D was also crying!!!

So here it is.

While I know nothing about making a rug,I can appreciate the time and effort you must put in to your hobby. Good on you for sharing such a moving story. People like you are very few and far between. Regards Pete

Thanks PetenSue,  The rugs are easy to make, all you need to know is Double Crochet and single.... and be able to count. - Just ask Sue

I see you are fellow Kedron Owners. Welcome to the forum

Your work is beautiful, would you mind sending me the pattern as i would love to make it? I am not a super advanced crocheter but so long it is an easy pattern I am more than happy to give it a go, and donate it to the people that need it most.

wow your rug looks great! How long did it take you to make that? I've tried to crochet but the pattern never ends up how I like it. Keep up the good work.

Thanks almostthere, I have had quite a few requests for the pattern. It is not just a case of scanning a one off pattern, rather the book I have has the pattern in one area but instructions in an other, details about colours in a third. Can I suggest you look at  Jenny King designs on the internet. She sells both the book of tartan and plaids, or some she will just sell you the download....

Link attached as an example:  https://www.jennykingdesigns.com/product/aberdeen-district-tartan-rug/

Hi there hungryhippo, thanks for your comment. I bought the wool for the rug in Brisbane 2019 - that would have been just before Easter. I completed it while on Kangaroo Island - December so just before Christmas.

It really depends on how much time you have to crochet. The rug builds quickly, the weavng of the chains is more of a backbreaking task, unless you have a nice hight table, ironing board or bed.

See comment below/above for almostthere for details of the pattern.

Well done.  A very kind & thoughtful thing to do and a fantastic Rug.

My Niece made one for me that I use every day of the year (when at home) & have done so for almost 10 years.  In the summer, I put it over the leather recliner and lie on top of it. In winter I put it over my legs.  The greatest 70 year old birthday present ever.

SWMBO steals it every now & then to wash or air it, despite my protestations.

Thanks Cupie, the first few years on the road produced a blanket for our caravan, and two for various grandies. Since then it has been these tartan rugs. One day, maybe, I will do another for us - as we get older.

Thank you ERI LI, I am very humbled by your offer. But do these for charity, not for sale. I could never put a price on the hours of work involved in these rugs.

That is one of the most heartwarming stories I have heard for some time. You obviously not only brought something of very real value to Val, but brightened her life in a way that was so very kind and thoughtful. It is a beautiful rug and I am touched by your generosity and kindness.

Hi Erin, I too am fond of Scottish heritages, being of that heritage my self. I love the tartan colours, right back to when I was young and had the odd tartan skirt with pink twin set to wear with... Nowadays it is jut a scarf or blanket.
