Hi, has anyone had experience in using or purchased a Helinox camp chair. Have had at least five different brands of camp Chair and always found them bulky to store and uncomfortable. Regards Wayne
We bought some cheap copies to try because of restricted space.
They are certainly comfortable and compact. The only down sides are that they are a bit low and they take a minute to assemble or pack instead of 3 seconds.
Cheers,
Peter
We were very keen on them but its impossible to find an outlet that carries more than a few models, so you cant work out which is the most suitable for you. Some were very uncomfortable, some pretty good. We also found that the dimensions shown on their website were sometimes wildly incorrect, so it was impossible to work out what we wanted. At up to about $370 it became easier to stick with what we had.
We have had 2 Sunset chairs for 2 years, got them as that's all that fits in the car as we generally sleep in there as well. The chairs are very well made, more solid than other makes we tried. The only issue is they need to be on level ground or on level sand, more so sideways than front to back. It's simply the nature of this design of chair.
Since this photo we have bought 2 bases for sitting the chair on sand & headrest air cushions which work well, you can put a towel in the chair's carry bag which is designed to be a head cushion, either way it's nice to have. We sometimes put a foam mat on the seat for warmth. In this photo is the Thermarest cusion, but we actually prefer a bit of foam, Macpac sleeping mat cut to size.
We also have 2 stools (cheap aluminium) to put our feet up. We also bought the large Helinox table, although well made, we prefer out home made timber table, better height & folds flat anyway, so we don't really use the Helinox table anymore.
I sat in the latest Helinox chair at Tentworld while in Perth a few months ago, it's a bit larger than the Sunset chair & I liked it. If we hadn't got the Sunset chairs we would buy the new larger model, but it probably will not quite fit in the space we have allocated to the chairs (at night between seat & water containers) as we are really tight on space. I wouldn't buy anything smaller than the Sunset chair unless you are hiking, even then the Sunset chair is very light.
Overall we are very happy with the quality of all the equipment we have bought, even the table we are not using, & the mail order was quick every time.
We bought one of the soft seat covers which doesn't actually fit the Sunset chair to see if I can modify it to clip on. We like it but I haven't got around to modifying it yet. It would be nice if they made a soft cover to fit the larger chair.
Glad I could help. I'll add that they take a minute to pack up but you get pretty efficient at it. We always wrap the legs in the back of the seat fabric so the front stays cleaner, starting at the thin end of the fabric.
If we had room we would probably go for a conventional chair as they are instant to open, but if it is a space issue or you need a few extra chairs then these are probably the best option.
They are really light weight so a light wind will blow them over so sometimes a peg in the ground over the centre beam does the trick.
A cheap stool to put your feet up is worth investing in, a bit more luxury!

They also do a Vintage Extra Stout ageing it for a year. It is really smooth but I haven't seen it for years unfortunately. They make a batch once a year, I think about this time of year from memory, so I should ask if it is available.
It would be the Savanna chair, with a beer holder on the side!
I'm 86kg & the Sunset chair is good but the Savvana chair just has that bit more room which is nice. Other half is a lot lighter & the Sunset chair is fine for her.
