World running out of sand.

Not only are we running out of water. The world is running out of building sand. We can't use desert sand in concrete as the grains are rounded. Australia exported sand to Dubai to build the world's tallest building Burj Khalifa.

I suggest that it is only a question of cost. Plenty of rock that can be crushed.

Yep cost, a bit like oil, we use a lot of oil simply to pump oil out of the ground.

Another "Saturday Extra" listener - it is an excellent programme and the delightful Geraldine Doogue (the thinking man's crumpet :) ) is an excellent host/interviewer and has a wealth of knowledge.

The sand piece was most interesting and totally new information for me.

I have a son who is a plant operator in a sand quarry down the Gold Coast - their sales of sand are down 50% to last year and they are laying workers off.
I wonder why desert sand has rounded grains?

Maybe Chinese sand was used instead of Australian sand in Opal Tower.
