I suppose that it is a timely reminder to all us older folks, to prepare ourselves as best we can, when we are travelling away from the larger towns
I do remember reading, about the West Australian medical people being concerned, by Grey Nomads cluttering up the smaller hospitals, in the north of the state
What a great service this wonderful organisation provides for the people of the Australian outback regions.
I had the benefit of the service back in 2005 when I suffered a heart attack when visiting immediate family in Mackay. The RFDS flew me to Townsville for first class medical procedure which has therefore allow me the benefit of sitting here telling you of their wonderful lifesaving service.
We also donate to the RFDS and of course the Heart Foundation.
I guess that there is not one of us so called Grey Nomads that leave home thinking that we will need the RFDS during our tour of the Great Outback.
Here is a link you may wish to follow up and donate.
We donated money to the RFDS. We've been receiving "begging letters" from them ever since. Tried to unsubscribe but to no avail.
Morning Olive, if and when you need the RFDS you may come to understand and appreciate the service a little more.
The concerning aspect of this thread is that so many forum members have chosen to ignore it, traveling oldies with chronic health conditions are obviously putting the RFDS and remote health services under pressure, guess people feel its their right to be rescued from remote regions (at tax payers expense) even though they put themselves at unnecessary risk.
It never ceases to surprise me when people with life threatening conditions continue their travels and expect the medical people in whatever remote region they relapse in to pick up the pieces.
We've certainly modified our travel habits as the years progress.
What is the meaning of chronic?
The definition of chronic is something that lasts for a long time, keeps coming back or continues to happen. An example of chronic is back pain that a person has every day. An example of chronic is allergies that a person has often. An example of chronic is taking pain medication on a daily basis.
I think you mean "Acute"
Anyway, what do you expect everyone to do stay at home and vegetate ! Be careful you might suffer a heat attack, you shouldn't be out there.

Morning iana,
Had I wanted to use the word "acute" I would have done so.
As far as this is concerned "Anyway, what do you expect everyone to do stay at home and vegetate ! Be careful you might suffer a heat attack, you shouldn't be out there."
Not my meaning at all, however what I am saying is people need to use a little common sense, sadly there seems to be less of this commodity available nowadays.

From our observations of traveling elderly folk the RFDS will have it's work cut out in the future. Lots of obese people around, over eating, too much alcohol & no physical activity amounts to major health issues.

We used the RFDS for a medical emergency whilst in the Sandstone area. First time either of us has had medical problem
Very grateful they are there, extremely grateful for their help.
