satellite tv

Just a query about Satellite TV

Looking at putting it into or onto Van ,Can i run it on a computer screen or must it go through a Tv

We already have the decoder box and card which we use at home

Where would the best place to get the parts from, like dish ,and what size is recommended

would secondhand parts be ok

Is it better to fix Dish to roof or better to have on ground or on pole on front of Van

Any help would be great

Hi Cowboy
Lots of information both here and other RV forums.

Also Satplus out of Melbourne will give you all the help and support to add the Sat tv to your RV.
85cm dish will get tv reception in most of Australia, someplaces are a little more difficult than others, but don't go any smaller with your dish.
Tripod will give you more flexibility/adjustment than one mounted on a draw bar on the front or rear of a van.
good luck
Ian

Re mounting.  I find that having a removable pole on the front A frame that can be quickly mounted on the  rear of the van very useful.  I also carry a Tripod  and about 40 metres of Coax Cable.
There are times when The dish has to be Set up away from the van to get a line of sight on the Satellite.
Also make sure you get a  Sat Finder that only looks for the  one satellite.  This is the one I use. Simple to use.

David, you dont say what box you are talking about. Is it VAST or Foxtel? That may influence your decision.

To see if it will run on the computer, try it at home by plugging it into the computer you intend to use. Perhaps talk to either the computer supplier, or your decoder supplier. That way you will know and be able to source anything you need. My gut feeling is it wont without some software being installed.

We have a second hand VAST system that has cost in total $350 to set up, include the decoder. Runs well, so dont be afraid of a second hand dish and tripod. I wouldnt mount to van as I prefer the freedom to park where I wont, and put the dish remote so we can set up according to shade and wind. I would go for tripod over a fixed style triangular base if you get similar to our set up, as a bit easier I believe to level.

Hope you work it out.

Like elliemike we have the Dish (in our case 85cm Oval) on the A frame, if travelling can also angle the cruiser/van so that we can use the dish still on the A frame with Cruiser connected to the van.

To use the dish away from the van: Can remove the tube holding the dish on the A frame and bolt on 3 small tent spreaders and peg the other spreader end to the ground. Also have a Peg tag at the bottom end of the Tube. But have only done this x times, years ago. When free camping in the bush I position the front of the van in such a way to easily pick up the sat signal.( Cruiser not connected to the van)

Also have the same Sat Finder as elliemike, these units are great ( From Satplus)

Good advice,,, we use stand (pre tripod model) and 30m cable,, takes a bit longer to set up but "mobile" within 30 m for difficult spots

If you are taking your foxtel box with you , then you will need the Satellite for a reception.

We got rid of Foxtel at home and we now have Stan Netflex and You Tube on our new smart TV.

We are now looking at a different system.

We have our Internet connection via Telstra when on the road.

We have been advised that you must have a chrome cast unit. Plus we are visiting Telstra to seek their advice re the new set up to suit us.

This system means no bloody worries trying to find the Satellite, connection cables etc etc.

We have a chrome cast unit at home so we can watch on another TV.the exact programs that areavailable on our main smart TV.

At the moment we are a bit of a dummy re this set up. But we will get on top thanks to followForumite.
