Hi, We are planing a trip to Tamworth in October to see our Daughter compete in the Carriage Driving Championships, and would like to get some advice on where the best overnight stops are. Going down to Tamworth on the New England H/Way from Brisbane, then Going back by the Pacific H/Way. We only want to be on the road for about 3-4 hours daily. Looking at Hotels with free camping on the New England, or any other good stops that you guy's recommend.
Then on the way back, taking our time on the Coast to see some sights and maybe a spot of fishing.
Also at Deepwater, their is a restored pub on your left, just as you enter the 60 zone, their is free camping there behind the pub. The meals and atmosphere is great.

Our stops change everytime we leave our Brisbane base, Willowbank, Aratula, Delvene (we like that one), Wallangatta, Mother Ducks Lagoon Guyra, Bendermere Rodeo Grounds, Moombi lookout. Deepwater hotel, Red Lion hotel.
Best bet is get on wikicamps, showground camping on facebook, pubcamping facebook.
A long time ago, 2014
I stopped at the following places overnight, on the New England Highway
10 mins north of Glen Innes there is a free overnight spot at Beardy Waters - drop toilet but no drinking water
There is a dump point and potable water in Glen Innes, but no free camping there, but there is a Caravan Park
Delvene - has flushing toilet, and potable water, plus dump point - I believe that it may now be a donation/low cost site
Mother of Ducks Lagoon Guyra - has flushing toilets, and potable water, but strictly 24 hours only
Deepwater Hotel, they do ask that you buy a meal - small cost if you want 240 volt power, free if you do not require power
Moombi lookout south of Stanthorp - has drop toilet but no water - does not seem to be in Camp Book 10 ?
Jennings at the border of QLD/NSW - Flushing toilets, potable water, and BBQ
As others have said, download the Wikicamps (less than $10), or buy the Camps Australia Wind book, latest version is 10
So you only need one stop on the way down based on your requirement of being on road for max of 3-4 hrs per day.
It looks like the pub at Jennings on the border will be perfect. Easy drive from Brissie and again to Tamworth. Alternatively there's the free area behind the Driver Reviver in Wallangarra - also on the border (can get busy but it's a big flat area). Or drive a few Kms further and stop at Tenterfield showgrounds.
