2019 The Year Of Outback Tourism.
Permalink Closed

Not too long ago the QLD government announced that they were allocating $3,000,000 to encourage visitors to Outback QLD this winter.

A few months ago they had good rain over a large part of the area.

2019 has now been renamed the year of the bushfly plague.

In most of the places that we have visited over the past 6 weeks they are so bad that you can't come out of your caravan between 10am to 5pm.

When the flies clock off, the mozzies clock on

We've tried various repellents & wearing nets over our faces.

Like a few others that we've spoken to we are now heading south, cutting our trip short by 3 weeks.

We'd rather put up with the cold.

In over 40 years of bush camping we've rarely seen flies like it or shortened a trip because of them!

You must be flyblown by now! I haven't seen flies for 4 months any where in western QLD. Except around Canarven Gorge. Nothing at all buzzing around the outside lights here at night even. Currently near bug free Ravenshoe. Joe

You haven't gone far enough west, out past Charleville & Barcaldine.

Places like the Paroo & Barcoo River, Carnavon Gorge isn't Outback QLD.

You wouldn't have any idea where I have been or not.  Did all your flies affect you?

How could you possibly be so pompous to tell me I haven't gone far enough west, out past Charleville and Barcledine?

I reckon we have traveled more miles and gone more places this year than you ever have reported for your self here.

Below are a couple of pics I took recently - at places you claim I haven't gone to. (Still no flies there then either)

Yes we saw your happy snaps before, probably taken months ago.
I dare you to go back to Barcaldine now.
We were there a week ago and it was BLACK with flies.
While you're there get something done about your aggressive behaviour. LOL.

We were in Barcaldine yesterday.

A few flies around but certainly not enough to be a worry about.

Sometimes when you are caravaning you have to toughen up a bit.

After 40 years of bush camping in tents & camper trailers we're pretty tough, our one & only caravan is a soft option.

Head out west of Barcaldine into the real Outback & see how you go with the flies. laughing.gif

Can you catch some disease from flystrike?

You haven't seen the Charleville 'happy snap' before as I have never posted it before!!!

I am still up here in QLD, not just holidaying and running off back home.

Agressive behaviour? who has been telling who what to do?

Keep replying and making a fools of yourselves if you wish. I love it.

Joe.

We have recently travelled through (or stayed at) Charleville, Aramaic, Barceldine, Winton, Richmond, Julia Ck, Cloncurry and Mt Isa, and other places in between.

We did have flies, some spots worse than others, but nothing that would make us turn back. Seeing this great country has its good, bad and unwanted bits, but you should take it as a whole, thats life.

 Hi Farmhat,

We were out there after the heavy rains and we did not become overly concerned with the flies. The locals were certainly happy for the rain to fall.

Nature being nature, all aspects of life rely on water to survive, so any Aussie will expect an increase in insect activity after a rain event.

The heading of this topic indicates to me at least, that the poster might be concerned about the money the govt injected into these communities in an attempt to provide some spending by visitors to help local economies.

His quote of 2019 being renamed the year of the bush fly plague is utter nonsense. I would like to see where that is documented.

Only a soft C**k would go home due to flies.

He changed his forum name but most of his posts are still rubbish.

There seems to be a ''pack mentality'' happening here. Obviously some men enjoy harassing women.

My husband (DD) unsubscribed from this forum 6 months ago & hasn't taken any interest in it since.

No, I called it the year of the bush fly plague. There was no indication in my post that it was in any way official.

It takes a few months for the fly population to breed up to plague proportions after a rain event.

The flies in Outback QLD are currently in plague proportions. If you doubt my words get out there & see for yourself.

We met quite a few people heading prematurely south or across to the coast to escape them.

End of story.

No, not end of story!   I for one will call you out.

I am not and do not enjoy harassing women!

I was of the opinion, rightly or wrongly that the person behind olive oil was your husband (DD) as the olive oil posts have the same bitter tone. Why did you suddenly replace DD? I was enjoying not having his sarcasm and bitterness around here.

To be honest it seems quite weird that DD leaves this forum and his wife just comes along and takes over posting, along the same lines.

A few people disagreeing with some of the content of your posts does not make a "pack mentality"

I don't doubt your words about your fly problem, I just posted that I didn't agree and that I am experiencing the flies differently than you in the same areas.

It is you who went on the attack.

I really don't have the words to describe posters like yourselves who try to put down my 'happy snaps'. I am proud of them. I put up with all those flies to take them!

Joe

Hi blaze, when someone starts maybe telling me I like attacking women, well, I am gonna stand up for my self. I don't need  negative comments on that from you.

Regards, Joe.

 Your points are valid Farmhat,

It wasnt that long ago that the male half of that combo when challenged claimed a post in which he was quite rude to my wife was then stated by him to be written by the female half of his combo.

So the pack mentality that is mentioned above does not exist.

If concern over who is posting is a problem for the dynamic duo then they could do what I do and sign my name at the bottom when I post thus identifying the contributor.

My wife wont contribute to Desert Oils or Olive Dweller or who ever puts the posts up, due to their rudeness.

I maintain my comment having travelled this country for most of my adult life and flies are a fact of life in the bush but from my observations when out in western Qld last month, the flies werent any different to any other time when conditions are good for breeding and would certainly not force either me or my wife to go home or to change our trip plans.

Maybe they should have gone west in February when it was 50 deg and not a blade of grass or any livestock anywhere. They could have maybe gone out their with a genuine offer to help rather than to go out there and whinge about the flies.

I think they should stay home.

Signed

Rob

To those that doubt that there is a fly plague in that area, go there & see for yourselves, then report back to me.

Particularly you ''keyboard cowboys''.

We are now at Boulia and very few flies.

Can't go much further west in Qld. than that.

As i said you have to toughen up a bit at times.

Perhaps we could get Macca, Young Simmo and Hey Jim to offer a view so that we can really get some perspective.

i don't think anyone has dropped their bundle.

As I posted before. . . . . . . . . you just need to toughen up a bit. A few piddlin' little flies won't hurt you.

Given how personal and provocative it's become I'm surprised this stupid thread is still open.

If we experience any other fly plagues on our travels in the future we won't be posting anything about them on here. For some strange reason people get so passionate about the subject. laughing.gif

funny thing flies and how they effect different people, I can be covered in them and they don't annoy me much, the wife on the other hand could have 4 flys buzzing around and it would ruin her day, So maybe that is what we are talking about in this thread
cheers
