Great Australian Bakeries

My wife and I are the official self appointed Australian Bakery pie/pastie and cake testers.  Putting our diets aside, we cannot resist a good bakery for a stop.   Highly recommended is Sharp's Bakery at Birchip in Victoria - whether you fancy a great range of pies. pasties, vanilla slices, etc, this is the place.  So if you are doing a Silo drive in the general Mallee area we recommend you stop at Birchip.  The Bakery shop at Kyneton (Vic) has recently been awarded for the quality of their range of pastry.  Also at Kyneton you should drop in at the Local Meatworks, Hardwicks Meatworks Abattoir located at Knight Court, Kyneton that has a large onsite shop with a large range or fresh meat, etc for sale- there is plenty of parking for rigs etc. (Just ask Mr Google for directions.)  The Yatala Pie/Pastie drivein alongside the motorway just south of Brisbane is also worth a visit and a break.  It is also suggested that we should support the many farmers that have roadside stalls with vegies and fruit for sale on numerous roads around Australia.{However remember the quarantine fruit and veggie stops at State/Territory borders. We are sure many, many others have their favorite shops and stalls.   Regards, AlPal.

In a lot of country towns these days many bakeries don't bake anything. They are really just a cafe.

Kiplings Bakery, Port Wakefield South Australia, well worth stopping for.

Ignore the grumpy reviews, some people are just hard to please, they do get very busy.smile

You must visit different towns to us.

We love the country bakeries and call in as often as possible to sample local fare and support the locals.

My vote for the best we have been to goes to Stone Hut in the mid north of South Australia.

On the Hume there are 2 very good stops. The first is at Holbrook NSW, where there is a permanent lineup at the bakery in the middle of town. They now operate a second outlet at the Caltex servo on the southern side of town.
The second is at Beechworth in Vic. Its a bit of a drive off the highway but believe me the trip is well worth it.
Just thought of another beauty. Once again a few k,s off the highway in the centre of Rutherglen.
I too am attracted to a good pie!
While Im on a roll I must mention the best vanilla slice in Australia. Also the most expensive. Its at Sorrento on the Mornington Pen.
Cheers

Good pie shop north of the Main Street in the town of Gin Gin.
Don't let the name fool you.

When in Tassie and if you visit Australia's old golf course ( ????) try the Bothwell Bakery.

But really they are all over that country, including a top bakery in our estate shopping centre.

If you have traveled around France from bakery to bakery, it's all downhill from there!

We noticed that the bakery is not as sweet as here, it has a far better balance which gives a better taste. We load up everything with sugar thinking it tastes better. Well it doesn't.

Also interesting, in France we didn't go without & we actually lost weight over a month & that was driving around in a car & not doing much exercise...... We better go again!

Recently called in at Stone Hut on our way to Wilmington & the Flinders Ranges. They didn't bake bread that day. LOL.

Eumundi bakery in Qld. is a beauty.

They make their own pies. Fantastic. Bread is beautiful too.

That's a bummer. Must be disappointing when lots do not do their own baking and you finally find one that does.

Should have had one of their pepper steak pies.

Two stand-outs:
For variety, Freddo's at Fredricktown NSW on the Pacific Highway;
For great quality, try the chunky beef, chilli and cheese at Ridgy Didge Pies at Abermain NSW between Cessnock and Kurri Kurri.

Red Beard Bakery in Trentham ( still use wood fired ovens ) and my absolute favourite ( especially for their pies ) is Uprising Bakery in Newcastle. It is down a small one way side street so no room for your caravan. Rod.

The Bakery at Cunnamulla Qld (about three doors down from Cunnamulla Hotel - short walk from Visitor centre), would rank pretty high on my list. Pies are chock full of premium beef chunks and no gristle

I'm a big fan of a 'good quality' custard tart. Still looking for the one though. Got close a couple of times. Those crappy ones in supermarkets are make believes. A good quality sour dough bread is also on my favourites list. Again though, hard to find.

Zest at Stanthorpe Qld gets my vote. Go there every time I'm in town. More of a coffee shop atmosphere but there's a real pastrycook out the back and everything is made on the premises. Tripadvisor Certificate of excellence 5 years in a row.

Hardwicks Meatworks no longer sell from the abattoir. They now have a street outlet shop in Mollison St (still ask Mr Google, but it is the main north/south shopping strip in town) Same great prices and same great range of meats.

Come on Olive Oil. You are obviously a glass half full person. There are many great bakeries in many country towns in Australia. Most make their own products and they are bloody good. I can taste a vanilla slice coming on now. Or maybe a coffee scroll- love these with plenty of fruit. It's hard to go past a chocolate eclair but I really loved the scallop pie that I had this morning at Jarrods Bakery in Bairnsdale, Vic. "Olive"- go try one of the recommended bakeries in this post. You have get a great surprise.

Grey Nomads of Australia- lets give old Olive a list of great bakeries so that he can appreciate how hard these bakers work and how good their products are.

I worked in the old Kilmore Bakery for 13 years. It is one of only three bakeries in Australia that uses a scotch oven, this makes a hell of a lot of difference to the goods baked there. We used to use a wooden peel to remove the pies from the oven, back then they were the best pies too. Everything was baked on the premises. There is a huge difference between a bakery & a hot bread shop! It has since changed hands so no longer the bakery it was 20 years ago. The Bridgewater Bakery ( In Bridgewater, Vic) make the best vanilla slices in Aus. I have been telling them that for years, recently they were actually awarded with that prize. I love my vanilla slices! The Bakery at Maiden Gully, Bendigo make a very good pie & yummy carrot cake.

You obviously don't do much travelling.

Or is it that you don't go into many bakeries ???

Olive Oil  hope you can go a little bit further north to Farina just before Maree. They have a bakery open for just 8 weeks a year. Lamb pies to die for. Spent some time there

last winter.
