We recently stayed at May's Bend free camp for three very enjoyable nights. Luckily for us a few days after we left a large group of indigenous youths came rampaging through, stealing property & vandalizing cars & caravans. We will not be camping there again. We spoke to someone who was there at the time, apparently is has been "hushed up" as it might affect tourism in the area.

How NSW town labelled 'most dangerous in world' changed its destiny
Morning Olive Oil, I wouldn't camp within 50 km of Bourke, have visited a number of times, it obvious the place, whilst interesting historically, has enormous social problems.
There are thousand of camping areas, Caravan Parks, show grounds, etc etc that one can visit with having to put up the the some of riff - raff in and around Bourke. in N.S.W.
I do have a feeling for the local retailers etc, who will miss out on the tourist dollar.
Walgett ,Brewarria and Bourke are towns that i was warned about years ago especially seeing all the boarded up shop fronts and bottle shops with alcohol locked behind perspex. In did stay once on the river in the free camp and the cops were doing patrols but i give these towns a miss and usually go to the gwyder caravan park at Moree and sit in the hot pools with all the southeners
