Truma Vario gas heater eco

Considering fitting a Truma Gas Heating for Van 21ft so I can do free camping and not need generator. As i already have Gas keeping to Gas heating seem better idea against diesel heating. Question has anyone installed gas heating to go under bed, realize need licenced gas installer for gas hookup. is this an effective way to heat,  does it smell when running, fairly economical?. quiet to run especially during night.  Likes and dislikes for this appreciated.

I have a Truma gas heater fitted under a bed and flue'd to outside. No problems. I have been off grid for some time and usually a 9kg bottle lasts 14 days using fridge on gas 24/7, gas water heater 30 mins twice a day, gas stove. With the heater added to the mix morning and night for 3 hours each I get 12 days. I have been using a 45kg bottle recently and still going after 6 weeks.

Yes they use gas but nothing serious. Yes you can hear the fan inside and a little noise outside from the vent but nothing serious.

Mine is on as we speak and I am warm as and it's around 6c outside.

 Hi Jeepnudger

This past week I have been looking into gas or diesel heater.

the diesel heater was owned by BIL. we went to the caravan and had a look at the installation, very basic, no real rocket science, we started the heater up didn't take long to feel the benefits. Next step was to go outside to listen to the exhaust noise. Not good, terrible. don't really want one. It will not matter how cheap they can be brought for, as cheap as $300 on e bay. the one I viewed was just under $2000, minimal fan noise inside the caravan, didn't notice the horrible noise with the windows shut, not very fair to your neighbours. We had experienced this noise in couple of camps, Bendemeer we were parked about 12 metres away and wondered what the noise was. Terrible, terrible but they are real cheap and if cold I would invite everybody in to share the warmth of my caravan.

Friday while visiting friends who have a gas heater installed in there pop up camper, once again the installation was not rocket science, a gas certified person was needed to finalize the gas hook up, minimal extra cost. We started the heater up and ran it for a while  to feel the warm air, now remember this is a camper and I was not able to hear the exhaust until I walked nearly up to the outlet. A very low hum was heard and its on the awning side, unnoticeable. Very good. The main down side is the up front cost of the unit $1900. I think in some ways it would be so much easier to fit and my way of looking at it there is no wrong way to fit it, a little bit more flexible maybe.

Myself the cost is going to make it had to make my mine up, this week has been a little uncomfortable coming up the New England area of NSW with the cold, booking powered sites when we like to go off grid and I keep thinking "I can not take our savings with us"  and having a good quality heater would be a good bit of kit to have to give us that advantaged to be any where we want to be. The cost to run them both is very minimal.

Take the time to find the two units fitted and then listen. Hope my thoughts help.

I have a Truma Vario gas one under the bed in our 18ft  poptop, very efficient, cheap to run, no smells (outlet under van), night setting gives a low hummmmm, installed myself with gas fitter sign off after inspection. Simple gas install if you have gas nearby.

We have been using it in preference to our 240V ceramic one in Parks, quieter and more efficient.

I have a Truma gas heater installed under the bed. It is not as neatly done as The Travelling Dillberries' as it takes up more space than necessary for isolating from other surfaces, objects, etc. but it is quiet, economical on gas and very effective in sub-zero nights/mornings.

Is there any particular reason you added that cross-piece under the van to install the vent in? Does it need to be vertical and/or installed in metal due to the heat output? I ask because on mine I was thinking of just fixing the vent in the wall (fibreglass) or straight through the floor (wood). Thanks.

 G'Day Mamil,

Instructions said exhaust should be mounted vertically in a wall or plate. Actual outlet has a smaller vent as well (you can see in the pic) that directs the exhaust down, away from openings or windows. So yes you can mount the supplied vent in the wall vertically, there a 2 pipes, smaller (exhaust) one inside and protective/heat one over it.

I went straight down thru floor which suited my heater location.

I also installed a direct connected 12VDC LPG alarm under the bed (near the power point) and a Carbon Monoxide alarm on the wall near the bed.

(not shown in pictures)

Thanks, and for the link to the installation manual. Yes, it says flue must be installed vertically, so I guess I'll go with the side wall. Have already got CO alarm, but would be interested to see your LPG one?
