Derby WA to Carnarvon Gorge

Hi everyone

Would love some tips re travelling the above route. We are booked in at Carnarvon Gorge on the 21/8/19. We want to book Horizontal falls at end of July. Is that allowing enough time to travel to Carnarvon Gorge? We are towing a caravan. Thanks

FUnwin

Derby WA to Carnarvon Gorge Qld is about 4200km. Easily travelled in 7 weeks but you are still bypassing a lot of the country. If you travel up to Darwin, Kakadu and Litchfield then spend a week in the area, the equation jumps to 5000km in 6 weeks, for instance.

Winton, Longreach areas offer a few things (dinosaur country, Matilda centre, QANTAS, Stockmans Hall of Fame). Alternatively, heading east at the Isa then south towards Emerald rather than diagonal to Barcaldine and Tambo then east gives you Charters Towers, Porcupine Gorge at Hughenden, Kronosauris Korner at Richmond. All good value.

Depending when you book the Falls, the 3 or 4 weeks you will have to cover the distance will be fine, but you will be limited if you want to spend some time in places on the way.

To my way of thinking, and depending on what you have seen, the highlights on the way not to miss would be Tunnel Creek, the Bungle Bungles, Katherine Gorge, Mataranka, the Dinosaur places at Richmond, Hughenden and Winton if possible. Longreach is good, as is Charleville, and Undarra Lava Tubes are popular. but I don't think you can do them all justice in 3 or 4 weeks. It may need you to decide what interests you and see what there is on the way, as these are all on different roads.

PS my list is nowhere near exhaustive of what is available, and you may have different tastes.

A scenic helicopter flight over the Bungle Bungles is not cheap but well worth it I think. We flew it in 2015 when up that way and couldn't get on a coach tour as they were all booked up days in advance (were up there in prime grey nomad season coupled with school holidays). We flew from Warmun.
