Oxley Highway from East to West - Road Conditions

Hello, We are thinking of driving this route East to West with a large 3200kg rig. Is it bendy? Are there steep hills? Is the road reasonable width? Are steep drop-offs / sides of roads?  Comments will be appreciated.

It would rate as one of the best drives in Australia.

Scenic, has bends, lots of ups and downs, yes it has reasonable road width, if you keep it between the white lines there will not be a problem.

I had a caravan club group at North Haven who were blocked from going north due to floods. We had to cancel a couple of parks we could not get to so when the Oxley opened we decided to get to Casino via the New England Hwy. A few of them were very apprehensive of going up there (even they lived in Canberra they had not tackled the Clyde Mountain.) After we got up the top every one of them reckoned it was a great drive, despite several sections being only one land due to the hillside slips in the wet weather.

It's just a matter of taking things cautiously for the first few times you have been up or down these hilly roads. After you have done a few you will wonder what all the fuss was about. Please let us know how the trip went?

Gooday,

Yes it is windy and has steep sections and plenty of bends some of them quite blind but if you drive according to the conditions and as previously said make sure you keep to the left especially on blind corners as there are often trucks traversing this road.

I matters not really which road you take from the New England to the Eastern Side of the Range it is steep but amazingly picturesque, came up from Bellingen via Dorrigo only a couple of weeks ago to Guyra, also used the Gwydir a few months ago East to West, equally picturesque, all windy but good roads.
