New Baiting program for wild dogs W.A.

WARNING FOR PET OWNERS (cut and paste from Kimberly vermin control)

Tens of thousands of baits will be laid across Goldfields pastoral properties in coming weeks, as part of a new campaign targeting wild... dogs.

Michelle Donaldson from the Goldfields Nullarbor Rangleands Biosecurity Association says wild dog numbers appear to be increasing.

"This time of year seems to be the time of year for big numbers, Ms Donaldson told the ABC.

It's across the Nullarbor, north to WIluna, east to Laverton and west to Sandstone - that's our area - and everyone's crying wild dogs at the moment.

It will be a pretty heavy campaign this one."

In the lead-up to the ground baiting program, dog owners are being urged to keep their pets off pastoral properties.

The warning comes after a dog died from a suspected bait last week at Malcolm Dam near Leonora.

"Get permission from the pastoralist to start with, Ms Donaldson said.

If you don't get permission there's reasons why they don't want you out there, then make sure your dog is muzzled at all times because you just cannot guarantee where they do let you go that a bait hasn't been moved."

Good job too. Wild dogs are threatening to make outback Australia I place where humans cannot take children and must be armed. Despite we aren't permitted longguns without a barrage of discouraging costs and beurocracy.

Totally agree with baiting program/s, unfortunately some baits are spread outside boundary signage by poisoned carcase/meat carried long distances by dogs or birds of prey, etc. Additionally some signage is always damaged by "souvenir collectors" and idiots in general.
Most effected area farmers/pasturalists are licenced to destroy feral pests on their property themselves or allowing professional shooters to eradicate - much better than City folk shooting on properties randomly with no restrictions.
It's incredible that even with current restrictions we get a few hunters wandering in and shooting, as well as idiots shooting from the road towards people and houses.
