If snorkel is facing forward turn it around so air doesn't ram down the tube. It is better facing the rear anyway as it doesn't allow dust to enter.

The way a snorkel oraface is facing is very much dependent on the vehicle and manufacturers recommendation. Some vehicle require a forward facing opening to ram the air into the motor, others this is not so dependent. I would be chec king with Mazda before I turned it around.

Same amount of air goes in irrespective of the way it faces, so it will make no measurable difference to the dust entry. In any case, by picking up air from a higher point it will likely get cleaner air than the standard intake.

To keep more dust out, don't follow other traffic so close.

In fact facing forward might give a small ram effect that would increase performance a tad.

There are three sources of noise. One is caused by air being sucked into the snorkel which creates a hissing sound. Nothing much you can do about this. The other is caused by vibration of the air due to the turbine blades. This is amplified by the duct walls, like a trombone. This can be mitigated somewhat by carefully choosing the length of the snorkel in respect to your cruising engine speed. The third source is the airflow buffeting around the snorkel when you drive at high speed. Varying the distance between the snorkel and your window frame may help somewhat. In most cases a snorkel likely increases cabin noise.

I drive a BT50 with a snorkel and find the noise level to be audible, without being overbearing. With the windows up the noise level is negligible. It was installed from new, so I have no idea of the noise level without it. Last vehicle was a Navara, also with a snorkel, which I thought was a lot quieter.

That was until the wife commented that she thought the BT50 was quieter. The difference of opinion was found to be caused by the fact that the snorkel was now on the drivers side (my side) whereas in the Nissan it was on the passenger side. Could this be part of the issue?

G'day Cobb.
You dont say who installed or which brand. Some Toyota owners have an issue with ARB, but others reckon no problems. The ARB ones have been mostly sorted with a " baffle arrangement ?". Also check all the mounting bolts,rivets, clamps etc. maybe even the entry to airfilter.

it is a TJM AIRTEC SNORKEL. thanks for all replies. i will take it back to the installer and have them check all joins etc and make sure they put air filter back in.

Years ago when I had a 2.8lt Hilux I had a Snorkel fitted , I believe it was a AirTec , it had a small piece of foam fitter to the top where the Snorkel Head attached to the tube

without the foam the noise was very loud , still wasn't the best even with the foam .

I eventually replaced the AirTec Snorkel with a Safari Snorkel that cured the problem .

But like I say that was a long time ago with a 2.8 Hilux , it might not be the case now with the BT50 .

Can you find someone with a BT50 and different Snorkel and go for a drive .

thanks jack, ill look into that tomorro. i initially asked about the safari and was told they are as good as each other

The noise is called induction noise.
Normally air filter boxes are specifically designed to be tuned to the frequency of the induction sounds to render the noise Null.
Fitting a snorkel screws with this.
Most modern diesel induction noise is caused by the turbo.
Baffles can be fitted inside the snorkel to re-tune and/or muffle the intake system noise.
