As the ownership of Regent changed a while back with no previous van manufacturing details past on, I am still finding my way around exactly how things work - mostly electrically.
Current issue: how is the breaksafe battery NORMALLY charged? I have run the van for several weeks on mains power but the Breaksafe battery voltage falls slowly. It got down to 11.7, which still works, but I have removed it and charged it separately.
The manual for our breakaway unit, and I am sure break-safe units are the same, recommend replacing the battery every 2 years, Just how this may effect insurance, I don't know. However our unit charges the battery via a 240 adaptor from the mains, or via the vehicle when traveling.
Our brake away battery was replaced at the 5 year mark, good one day and usual I run a multi meter over it before leaving home, it was a bit sick so went and got a new one. It was not that expensive and never thought much about it.
As I am near the front of my caravan with a nice glass of red, the ****ys coming in to roost making a hell of noise up here on the Murray, guess what I can not tell you where our brake away batter you gets a charging boast from.
So sometime in the future when I get home I going to find out, there is a multitude of wires but when to and from.

I replaced my Breakaway Battery only after two years. Why? Well, I discovered it was dead flat by accident really. I was doing something in the tunnel and noticed the light wasn't on the unit so investigated. Turned out it was wired to charge from the aluminium tent while stationary and by the Collie when mobile, however, no wires were actually connected to the unit it self, meaning no charging was going on. After trying to charge manually and without success I purchased a new battery. No problems since.
When stationary I can leave on all the time or turn off and once a week turn it on to charge for a day. I switch it to Car when towing. The battery is always charged now.
