Just ensure valuables and things that are new and shiny are locked away when leaving vehicles - also lock car and caravan when fuelling up, etc.

No camping but Mount Grenfell Historic Site west of Cobar is a nice day park to visit. Gundabooka NP on the way to Bourke is worth a climb but it is a bit of a drive in, even gas BBQ at the carpark at the end! Point Lookout NP east of Armidale has a nice lookout & nice walks but not easy, camping at the bottom on the hill.

There is no reason why you should have any safety concerns. Take the same precautions you would take in your own street.

We have just left Bourke and Lightning Ridge, now in Parkes. Stayed at the Mitchell Caravan Park at Bourke and the Lightning Ridge Holiday Park in Lightning Ridge. The park at Bourke was basic but okay and the Ligjtning Ridge park was very good. We stopped for coffee at Brewarrina and Walgett where we had to leave the car/caravan and walk and apart from taking normal precautions such as keeping valuables out of sight and locking the car and caravan when absent, we had no problems anywhere.

Chris, have you been listening to stories of the towns of Wilcannia, Bourke , Brewarrina and Walgett? If so I can assure you that those stories are ancient history. Yes, they were true of the situation a few years back. However, the local aboriginal councils have a large input to the running of those towns now and staying in these towns is now safer than staying in areas with a large feral white population. Try a stop in Brewarrina and have a look at their museum that has been built into the WW2 underground ammo stores. The fish traps in the river are also interesting.

Also get the WikiCamps app for your iOS, Android or Win10 device and look at the reviews for the camp sites around those towns. The general safety advice regarding free camping is to choose sites more than a community.

When we were in Brewarrina there was too much water & we were unable to see the fish traps, built tens of thousands of years before anything else in the world.

There is a fish ladder to the side of the river which is nicely built. It is the second fish ladder built as the native fish didn't like the first ladder as they were required to jump & apparently native fish don't like jumping that much.

The second ladder allows the native fish to swim up through the turbulence in the water & rest in quiet corners on the way up.

Also have a look at the jetty in Bourke. You see how high the water can reach in the river.

I would suggest Wikicamps app ol mate will give all the current safety concerns and free camps and caravan sites cost and routes, what ever you wish to along the way. Don't listen to all of the sad tales mate. I have traveled these route,s a number of times , covered 78,000 ks year before last not boasting but was working.

Hi guys, when you are heading from Adelaide to Sunshine coast, make sure you stay at Warrawong Caravan Park in Wilcannia, this little park is fantastic, amenities are second to none, very clean and tidy... You will not be disappointed..

Hello, we did the reverse of that trip during the record heatwave of late January early February. You wont have a problem. Make sure you try the artesian pool at lightning ridge. Also if you are into history, try the old police station museum at Silverton. Well worth the $5 entry, even cheaper for senior card holders and pensioners.

Three years ago we stayed at the Council caravan park in Wicannia just over the bridge. Picked up a key from Council, during business hours, for the toilets. Really nice Council staff. Hot showers included $5 each per night. A bit run down but there was nothing wrong with it.

There are some locals Aboriginal workers who drive around a lot (part of the government work programs)! But they are nice people.

I heard through the the grapevine that the local pub on the corner was burnt down due to a disagreement.

We stayed a few nights to recover from a few tough previous nights in the outback.

There was cheaper fuel at the other petrol station a few roads back in town on the west side of town.
