We are currently planning a trip immediately after Easter basically from Newcastle out through western NSW, into South Australla and hopefully down as far as Kangaroo Island before coming back home along the Murray. I would like to leave the van somewhere on the mainland for 3 or 4 days and take the car over does anyone have any suggestions about somewhere secure that is reasonably priced and close to the ferry ?

The caravan park near the ferry terminal at Cape Jervis will store vans.

I was just reading an offer on the Sealink Ferry website which is valid May through September - if you take a car and van over on the ferry 2 adults travel free. This means that the cost becomes the same as 2 adults travelling with a car i.e. $400 and that is what it will cost us without the van. The question is now would taking a 22' van over on the ferry and booking a powered site for 3 or 4 nights be a better option than leaving it on the mainland ? What do most caravaners do when visiting Kangaroo Island.
Cheers BB

We are on Kangaroo Island at the moment, having also taken our van across. Our ferry trip cost $800. How well setup is your van for low cost camping, water and power? and how many persons traveling. Just querying that cost of the ferry, our prices were, concession costs $80 each person, Vehicle $196 and the van $427 all return prices. Your van cost will be cheaper as its 3ft shorter. It also includes one night stay at Penneshaw is free for the van. Also book direct through Sealink or you pay more.
Where to go and where to stay we can help there too if you want.

Thanks Iana I just rechecked those prices and the cost they quote for return fares without concessions are adults $96, vehicle $196 and caravans $196. What i didn't see was the small print that said that is was for vans up to 4mtrs, ours is 6.5 mtrs not counting the drawbar or rear tyre and bumper. Apparently you have to ring their customer service and ask for a price for a caravan over 4mtrs. Considering its only 19km in distance the price that you said you paid for your van is a bit over the top even if they do give you 2 adult fares for nothing. Our van is pretty well set up for free camping but I would much prefer setting it up in once on a powered site in a CP and then using it as a base to explore the island. Thanks for the offer of info. I will send you a PM.
