Water from lakes/rivers

We can only carry 84 litres. We will have a joolca hot water unit and we'll purchase that with the matching pump.

As weight us an issue I'm hoping I can utilise that pump to suck water out of a water source through a filter system into our tanks.

Anyone done this and what filter system is recommended? I think I'll need to make my pump detachable (a second pump?)then move it to waters edge with a 12v lead.

I pump water from almost anywhere. I carry a normal RV pump to do that because they will self prime and it also serves as a spare for the camper.
We don't filter water gong into the tank at all but we do chlorinate all water and we have twin 10"filters after the pump in the camper and before the taps. They are a 5um sediment filter followed by a 1 or 0.5um active carbon/silver filter.

Avoid cloudy water as it blocks up fine filters.

Use a (yellow) plastic bucket then you can determine if any small impurities are in water than can cause blockages in your system/s.

We have only the one water tank which we keep mainly for drinking.

When we camp someone usually has a movable pump so we can have easy access to water for showers and washing.

We have a pump and heat exchanger mounted behind the Bull bar for pumping up water and heating it for showers, this makes the water in the caravan last for ages.

We have a 12v pump strong enough to push water thru a Best Water filter. As others noted, get a bucket of water out of dam/river to check particles/impurities then pump it into the van or spare container. We use bottled water to drink that we have either brought from home or re-bottled from a good supply somewhere. Will buy a slab to drink if necessary.

Only take river/lake water for shower etc and filter sediment out before it goes into tanks.

I can take genny to river and use 12V outlet to pump water direct to van (have pumped 45m hoses). Use two pumps,, a tiny whale submersible (on a stick into water away from bank) and a spare Shurflo for longer distances.

Other wise I pump into 180L tank in ute with 12v from ute.

Simple set up works well and no problems in 11 years.

Thanks, all replies useful

Ive considered my equipment on board-

-ex350 honda genny

-17 litre collapsible bucket

-2x 20L cubes stored in car boot

-wind up hose 10m

-fold up trolley

I think it best I utilise the genny, buy a second joolca  pump (thanks Peter) so it is a spare for the HWS. Buy an inline filter, pump thru filter to cubes, trolley them to van. 2 cubes per trip = 2 trips.

If close to the water can pump thru filter direct to tanks.

I'll  re-read your posts.

I bought the Joolca package that come with extra power leads, pump and hose as well as shower hoses. As I mounted the Joolca on the rear bumper, I use the pump to supply water from what ever source direct to the Joolca, I dont pump back into my tanks, I want to keep that water drinkable. I fitted a 2nd 80l tank and plumbed the house pump through a ball valve to the Joolca for if/when I want to use tank water, and I do when I know I can top up in a day or two. A 20 litre plastic drum will give you and the boss a reasonable scrub up. We practiced at home. The Joolca is great, but dont get caught like I did first trip away, everyhting was working, igniter clicking, no hot water (for the next 2 weeks). Batteries (2 D cells) were not fresh enough to open the gas valve.... I finally read the manual.

good luck
