Motorhome Insurance

Hi Nomads (we are not all grey yet)

Just buying a motor home and researching insurance companies.  Leaning towards Ken Tame, but does anyone have any experience with CARVAN?  Ken Tame have quoted $1106 for a 1012 Jayco Conquest.  Does that sound reasonable?

Thanks in advance

1012 Jayco sounds like a vintage motorhome....lol

We paid around $900 for a 2010 a few years back with CIL, wouldn't hurt to shop around a bit.

Cheers Bob

Depends on the value of the MH.
I suggest you get a valuation and insure it for agreed value.
Cheers,
Peter

I went with QBE.

We were with CIL for years with out a problem but we do not travel in the heat lately so QBE lets you not insure for times like that.

So I chose November, Dec, and Jan. I can still travel in  any month if I tell them and pay for that month. so for us it is practical.

CIL Rang as  we had been a long standing customer, and I put it to them that they had no such options and it might be a good thing to keep in mind. Of course they wanted to know who I was with but I refused to offer that info.

Just me but I don't like to hawk prices among companies.smile

Ken Tame is famous for there service and also road side assist which is a further $130ish but they are very good to deal with. Do you realise you also have to join CMCA?

Welcome to the forum, Balangara

As others have already said, it pays to shop around

There are many factors concerning the price of insurance

Such as
What no claim rating do you have with other insurers
What level of insurance do you want
How much excess are you willing to carry, if you make a claim
The value of your motorhome
Mechanical breakdown cover
Etc,etc

Around 2016, I sent emails to what I thought were, responsible insurance companies

Each company got the exact same email, with a note at the bottom that I was also contacting other insurers

I found very little difference between Ken Tame, and CIL, for a 2006 Jayco Conquest, on a Fiat chassis, with a $60,000 value

I went for CIL, because every driver using Ken Tame, had to be a paid up member of CMCA

But as Jade46 has pointed out, the Ken Tame roadside assistance is now an extra item, with extra cost

Below is a link to my 2016 research, but times have changed, so they are perhaps no longer relevant

Thanks Tony, jade 46 and others who have helped. I have opted for Ken Tame but all the others, CIL, AJ Gallagher were similar in price, around the $1100- $1160 mark with $500 excess. NRMA who I have all my other insurances with were a ridiculous $1600 or so. Ken Tame roadside is now $185 for 3 assists but I haven't seen the details yet. Ken Tame wants photos of the rig...inside and out. That's a new one.

We have been long term clients of QBE.

We agree with  diesel, re the summer travels. So our van is insured from April through to October. Price is around the $400 mark.

Also we can travel outside these months as long as we advise QBE.

Like my old Daddy use to me, "'Son a dollar saved is 2 dollars you do not have to earn."

All of our insurance policies are with QBE.

2 vehicles plus CPI - house and Contents and we elect to have Nil Excess. However the van carries a $200 excess fee.

We have found QBE to be vwery customer focused with any sort of claims.
