From the photo it appears that there are 3 lanes of highway each way on what appears to be a straight road.

One would have to wonder at what speed this this accident occured.

Sad day for the family and friends of the couple.

It would appear that the driver has died and his female passenger is fighting for her life in hospital.

We recently traveled along that way on our first long trip. You never know what is around the corner.

My thoughts are with their family.

The road is much the same quality as the Bruce Hwy that passes the Sunshine Coast. There are a lot of jackknife van accidents there.

Also note it was on the M31 and not the M5.

You wonder if some Muppet has done something stupid in front of him and he has slapped the anchors on and lost control. Roads like that you need to be on top of your game to stay clear of the idiots.

Aren't you suppose to leave enough clearance behind a "muppett"  so if they "slam the anchors on" you can stop in time?

Everyone has theories. Mine is that speed is the most common factor. Theoretically if you could tow at 160kph then the slightest fishtail/sway would set your rig off to heaven. But at 60kph you'll be unlucky to not stop a sway. So 90kph maybe 93 is the fastest I need to go. But of course I'm left for dead on most roads with 10ft high rigs doing 105.

Also remain in the fast lane for 80 metres past a semi, then pull into the left lane.
