Yep the Mrs said ok

Looks like we might be heading north and spending autumn on the way, and winter in Queensland. Have got to say I couldn't be more pleased.

Just have to go through Canberra to visit some old friends. Yeah I know a nice big detour as we will start in SA, but plenty to see. Not having traveled around Qld before I got out

the map and after having a good look, by jeez it is a big place. Can't see it all so not sure yet which parts to drive around. Not even sure which road out of SA to leave by yet, not

that it matters too much.

I asked the Mrs where do you think we might stop the first night? I got the usual reply which goes something like, lets just do what we always do, just keep driving till we want to stop somewhere. Suits me just fine and dandy.  Been a bit unwell recently, so it is just what the doctor ordered.

I do have one question though, over winter, how far north do you need to go before it starts to get muggy/humid.

Well, that's about it for now.

Joe

Joe, that depends upon how quickly you go up into Queensland. If you are not into the northern latitudes until May things will be OK. N Qld is generally only muggy in the wet season and a month of so either side. A few years ago it was only 7% humidity in Townsville (a record low.) Two years ago we were traveling the Flinders Highway in 40 deg temperatures, it was bearable because the humidity was so low. Last year the temps were much lower and we did not have more than a few uncomfortable days right up to the cape.

It is quite possible that your northern limits will not be governed by climate. It will be governed by your available time limits and how fast you are traveling.

Yoy sound like you are not very experienced in Qld travelling. I suggest you go up the coast as you will be going through the ACT. Return inland. You can cut across to Charters Towers from both Cairns and Townsville and come south from Charters. As an alternative you can go to at least Hughenden and down through Longreach and Cunnamulla.

If you're coming from SA to ACT, why not travel via the Hay Plains? I travelled through there a number of years back (flew to Adelaide, purchased a motorbike and rode it back to Canberra).

Stopped in some place the name of which I can't remember off-hand (~500 or so kms from Adelaide), and did the rest of the trip the next day.

Depends upon what part of SA he will be leaving from. South of Murray Bridge, across to Wangaratta becomes the favoured way.

Right up in the far north - e.g. Mt Isa - it starts to get a bit muggy around September. That was usually the month we planned to start heading south again, from right up there.

Hi Joe,
Providing you travel from Anzac Day to early September, you can head anywhere north for your southern winter to absorb our paradise. Generally from late August, the temperature difference between Darwin & Townsville (our "paradise", normally) is 2 degrees (Darwin 30, Townsville 28).

From early October, we get to enjoy the northern areas & their beauty in the wet all to ourselves as the humidity chases the southerners southwards.

This year the small businesses in Townsville & west from Hughenden will need a leg up to get them over our recent disastrous wet few of weeks.

It's going to be 39 degrees here tomorrow - would you like to share it? After all, I shared some of your lovely weather a few weeks ago from Canberra to Bendigo (44)!

Thanks for the offer Warren. we have 3 days of 37 about to hit here, so be happy to split the difference. :)
