These 6 magpies did a 10 second song busking for a bit of food with the one in the foreground leading the choir who ended with 2 final notes!

Feel free, here are a few screenshots from the movie full size. Last picture is the lead singer walking off saying his last 2 notes.

Sorry forgot to mention location. Lorne VIC, we came down from the north, turned left at the intersection & at the public beach front park. We had a bit of a chat with the council workers cleaning the area a bit later, it is a relentless task for them. We had picked up a bit of rubbish earlier around where we parked. The same issue everywhere!

Hi the rocket,
They are truly beautiful birds.
Maybe the one in the door way of your caravan is checking the motif on the mat.? :)

One of Australia's most liked/despised birds. Treat them right with the odd snack (no sugar) & they won't buzz you or that's what I have found. Perhaps being nearly 2m tall, I might appear as a small tree!

You people know there are two species - the white-backed (seen in Victoria, southern parts of SA) & the black-backed, see in the rest of the country.

Their song is only surpassed by their cousin - the Butcherbird (grey & pied are the more common, the black one is seen around some beach areas in Nth Qld). The description of the way they got their name is a bit gruesome - "it impales its prey (small vertebrates, large insects) on a thorn or wedges it into a crack or a forked twig in order to tear it or, sometimes, to store it".

Mind you the Magpie is no gentler & also attacks smaller birds, their nests.

I had one walk across the road last week when high 30 degrees, maybe 40 to have a shower. I was watering my letter box plant from 5 metres away( I know lazy me). She/he had a damn fine time wallowing in the water.
