Hi
To all dog owners who have put there dog on the ferry to Tassie,we would like to here of your experiences, we have a little French bulldog and would like to know if its better to leave him in the van! Or go with the kennels on board. Only we havent been able to find any comments on this service. He like most dogs likes company and plenty of water only 10 hours seems like a long time especially as you are unable to go down to the kennel area to check on them.
Thanks Scoota
We used to go every year to Tas. but since we have a dog we stopped going over.To lock up an animal for 10 hrs plus is very cruel. About 30 years ago we traveled from Melbourne to Hobart , it was a one off trip , that time we could check up on our pets , people took theyer dogs out of the kennel and played around for a bit.I don't think it would cost a lot of money to make a walkway to the kennels . Well , Tas. missed out for the last 3 years , unless they do something about it, we won't go again.Cheers
I have not seen any of their kennels that would have fitted a dog that size. I wonder if he had warned them about the size of the mut.
There was queer statement he made when he complained of lack of air-conditioning for the pets in the report:
"I would guess they're not allowed to have staff down there for any length of time because it kills [people], and then they go and put your bloody pets down there."
That's way off beam. The reason people don't go down there is because of security. It's got nothing to do with foul air.
Friends of ours have taken smaller dogs down there both ways. There has been no problems either way.

We took our "kelpie" over three years ago, while he was very happy to see us in the morning, he didn't seem to mind the trip!
Once you board and put him/her in their kennel you do not see them again until you are about to disembark. Water is provided for them and they are supposedly checked several times by staff during their journey.
I'm sure your best friend would prefer the trip, than to be left at home or in a kennel. Just be aware that there are a lot of national parks where animals are not permitted, we went over with friends who also took their dog, so whenever we wanted to visit a national park, one couple went in one day while the other couple dog sat and then we swapped over the next day, worked well for us!
Our best friends can be very resilient when they need to be.
Took our old blue heeler over a few years ago. He was fine. I wouldn't be comfortable leaving in van. There are other dogs in kennels as well and they have water and get checked on. I would do it again if I was going over. He was happy and not stressed when we arrived at Port.
No, I wouldn't do it. There's no way I'm going to leave my dogs for 10 hours plus without me being able to see if they were okay. Sure they might get checked on but what's to say they're not fretting and panicking in those hours.
My question is, what aren't dogs allowed to travel in a section of the ship where they can be with their owners, thus avoid any stress and problems? Lots of countries allow people to travel with their pets and have done for years. It's time Australia stopped having these crazy restrictions.
Thanks everyone for commenting. We still are a little concerned and will contact The Spirit and just ask a little more information.
One more thing though can you tell us do you place your dog in the kennel and is it outside on a deck or inside the ship somewhere. ??
Thanks again

Inside the ship scoota. Yes you put them in with their fav rug.
Kennels are the safest way for you dog. Less likely to cause themselves injury if it gets rough.
