Can't help on the free camps, but I did 6000 km in Tasmania in 1982 so there is plenty to do!

I like the west coast, old township of luina, Rebecca laggon, arther river , Strahan,etc. Not all free but cheap. there are cheap and free spos all over tassie. Been know to pull up and through a swag out next to many spots off the main roads next to a creek or river and spend a couple of days, don't overstay in this sorta spot. Free camp 200m down the road from my place at the boat ramp

used to often do 600km a day for work, just on the Norwest tip

Welcome to the gang Dozer, enjoy here and out in the playground.

If you don't have them already may I suggest you get a copy of 'Wiki Camps' for your phone or similar and a hard copy of 'Camps Australia'. I think Camps 10 is about to be released if not already. A small cost for great listings of all sorts of camps etc. There is also 'Caravan Parks Australia'.

Most importantly, enjoy Tassie. A great part of the world. I also agree and love the West Coast. But then I like the East Coast too. But then again, I just like Tassie.

If you look at the top of the page there is an advertisement for Camps 10. i ordered a copy last week 15% off when you quote the grey nomads code number plus it.s free postage - expected delivery is mid February. We are leaving for Tassie on the 13th with any luck it will get here before then.

We spent 3.5 months down there for the first time over new year 17/18 & loved it. Preferred the west Coast & the north east corner as we too like to get away from the crowds.

Dozer, only been back 2 months, Tassie is awesome for caravanners, (awesome for anyone who likes nature and history). Along the north coast we were blown away by the free camps where you back up to the waves... free. Lots of places we had to register (no charge) with the relevant council for a permit and several times saw the ranger drive around checking vehicles. We have a porta-potti and a 20 litre waste drum so we can be fully self contained and though no-one checked to see we were, quite clearly everyone we were near or saw also were self contained. It was often a requirement for the use of the area. In the centre of tassie we stayed at free camps established at sporting grounds etc same registration process (different council) and the toilets were all locked.
We often unhooked the van and went off to waterfalls or gorges for the day, as did quite a few others.

Only bad tassie experience.... Liffey Falls well worth the effort but there are no warnings that the roud in to the top is not NOT, a caravan suitable route, luck was on my side no oncoming traffic in or out, same at Spray Tunnel (Zeehan) road 9 foot wide greasy mud many tight bends. Again, luck was with me. A warning at the last point you could turn around might have been helpful.

Nat Parks like Bay of fires.... where else can you get a beach like that and park right there. Wikki Camps has all the answers and reviews.

Great advice from all of you, thank you very much. The journey begins tomorrow, so looking forward to getting into the countryside and bush. only a brief trip this time and I am sure we will have to come back and spend more time. Thanks again everyone.
