Recently I did the lap as the leader of a three van convoy, though we didn't spend all the time together. I have been reading stories on this site for some time and am always amazed at the varying opinions. I thought I'd put my two bob's worth in and have a say.
Six months we spent on our trip and I am happy to report that I never saw a caravanner where he shouldn't be. Not in truck stops or even closed up in free parks. Everyone I saw was doing the "right thing". And I was blown away by the amount of vans on the road.
The biggest problem I came across was poor signage. The RV friendly towns lead me into town for the parking areas then suddenly -- no more signs. The same with the information centres. There's signs coming into town, then none! So more than once I finished up in the centre of a town I'd never been to, and not knowing where to turn next.
Also, parking in town with a van on the back is a big problem, even at the info centre. When parking is made available the long sites are often taken by vehicles.
Having had my gripe, I so much enjoyed the trip that when I got home I spent three more nights in the van !!
After doing a trip I sit down and write a story, and this one ran to fifty pages!
