HELP PLEASE FOR WIRING SMALL DIGITAL VOTMETER/AMMETER


Hi all

my new ammeter/voltmeter arrived with no instructions. See pics please.

A previous one (different wiring) burnt out.

TESTING ON BENCH WITH 9V BATTERY   ----  If I connect large red and small red to + battery,,, AND large black to - battery it shows,,,

000 volts and about 5.4A WITH NO SHUT CONNECTED SO I HAVE A BASIC CIRCUIT I assume

If so does yellow go to input side of shunt and small black to output side of shunt?????

I don't want to connect 12V and shunt till I know wiring diagram.

I know some wizz will have the answer thanks.

Yep this compensates for having a common power source, not separate power source for the meter and load.

Baz,
Basically the volt meter goes across the voltage source, the ammeter goes in series with feed (shunt, etc).

There should have been an instruction sheet with the meter unit. There was for mine with various scenarios given.

Hi, this may help.

Got my Amp/Volts meter through Ebay. Usually has a connection schematic in the description and/or link to schematic.

Keep shunt close to the Fuse Box, which is the "Load". The fuse box will have a Positive (+) input connection and Negative (-) output connection. Colours may be Red/Black or Black/White.

You will need to make a short "Diverter" Negative cable from shunt to fuse box (keep cable guage same or heavier) and connect existing fuse box Negative cable to battery end of shunt.

The thick Red wire from V/A meter connect to Positive at fuse box (Load).

The thick Black to shunt battery side.

The Yellow to shunt fuse box (Load) side.

If long run is from shunt to V/A meter it is preferable to use shielded cabling (to overcome possible interference).

Ignore the "Transformer" in the schematic...it is just 12V (+ -) for Volt Meter so connect thin Red/Black wires to any 12V (+ -).

Thanks DickO,,, unfortuneately didn't work.

The u tube vdeo got either v or A but not both ,,, so still looking.

Make it work with WITHOUT external power source . same as last one I stuffed.

a bit more complicated than that as it has external power source to power the device separate from vehicle system,,,, that's the guts of the issue.

The schematic and directions are self explanatory.

How exactly are you connecting this meter?

This is a 2 in 1 meter...Volts and Amps.

Connect thin red/black to a power source in RV for Volts..

Connect thick red/black and yellow as per schematic for Amps.

What is it that is not working?

Not  exactly,,, see OP pics of wiring BUT THE ISSUE IS these need a separate power supply (ie 9V battery to power the unit),,,, THEN USING THE SHUNT.

I don't want a separate 9V battery supply to unit I want the whole thing from 12V van battery.

Pain in the bum this.

 Watch this video...using same Power Supply with Shunt and Load.

Much the same in my original suggestion.

Don't get confused by the wire colours, which are clearly explained in the video.

The meter and shunt should be a Matching Pair, so I hope you got the shunt and meter together.

Also, some meters have a built in shunt so different wiring again and usually require external power supply to load supply.

Thanks for your trouble DickO.

I'm totally frustrated,,, wired up exactly as shown (had this in prev video too) will show either V OR A and NOT simultaneously. 

All I wanted was simple meter to rough check solar charger values  ie voltage/amps rather than use multimeter.

Too hard,,, I have analogue ammeter but coarse scale not accurate.
