We are soon departing on our first month long trip to South Australia. We will be towing our Avan with a Mazda CX 5 and would like some advice on how to secure it . Would love some recommendations for a secure system that is not too heavy

Welcome to the forum MaryFell,

WE use a Nemisis wheel clamp www.purpline.com.au also a hitch lock that came with the Alko swivel hitch.

Also padlock safety chains so they can't be moved.

Bottom line is if the want it enough they'll take it. Might as well make it hard for them though, they might move on to an easier target.

Herc-Alloy chain and circular padlock - chain wheels to axle with padlock under the van, so it cannot be struck off. If placed discretely no-one will see it there before they attempt to tow it away.

If they want it they will take it, but slow them down with multiple devices which have very solid cross sections of metal. Not folded pressed metal. 

Additionally you could also chock up the caravan & simply let all the air out of the tyres as another level of defence. They won't get too far with the caravan with 2 destroyed tyres. I doubt these people will be carrying around a dual high speed compressor & or be patient enough waiting for 2 tyres to pump up!

Stick an old tow ball in the hitch and lock the hitch as people do when actually towing. Assumes you have this type of hitch.

Don't forget the hitch receiver locking pin, they are around $30 and rated same as oem with split pin.May need a spacer washer or two.

 When you click on the link to see the Saracen - there is also a link at the right hand side that opens a video - this shows how to fit and remove the Saracen.

 

I've had one for around three years now - when at home, the van is never parked without it fitted (but I've got other security devices as well, including two wheel clamps, etc.) - I don't have it attached when towing, and only very occasionally in caravan parks, where I feel things may get a bit dodgy if I'm away from the van for extended hours.

changing tact a little....friends had the same set up CX5 + AVAN they did some maths and realised they were really pushing the weight boundary. Just worth checking. they changed their tug.

Thats interesting . We have an AVan cruiseliner  towed by a 2.5 litre Mazda 5. Bought the car then decided on the van a year later and tend to agree that we may be pushing the engine a bit . Just try to chug along and not over/rev it . Looking at a changeover next year to a car with bigger engine .
