Grumpy Old Man and Placenames.

I know we are a country of peoples from all over the globe and for many English is a second language.

Please get the name right when you are talking about a place so we know where you are talking about.

One of the worlds best known roads from SA to WA.

The Nullarbor.

Means No Trees     NULL as in none and ARBOR as in Trees.

Like spelling Sydney as Sidney.

Rant over.Lol

Trevor.

You'd be a good one for confirmation. Is it Hervey Bay or Harvey Bay? I was recently corrected that the town of Derby (WA) is Derby, not Darby (as I call the horse race). Then the person who corrected me pointed out they pronounced Hervey Bay as Harvey Bay and then gave a big chuckle.

What about the AFL club Essadon? Melbn suburb Roxburgh - same as Edinburra - Roxburra.

And of course Mrs Bucket (Bouquet) in Keeping Up Appearances.

"English She be the death of me". A quote from my High school French Teacher.

English has 'one foot'   'two feet'  One Boot-two boots.... Or .Should  it be two beets. Lol or one sheep or two shoops Nope

Yup, Hervey Bay Pronounced Harvey Bay.

A well known Aussie  Daniel Ricciardo lots get it wrong and say Riccardo.

Aussie celebrity Catriona Rowntree even pronounces her own name as Catrina.

Us Poms must win hands down for weird pronunciation.

One time Pollie Lord Alex Douglas Home, Home pronounced Hume.

I won't start on Pommie place names. We don't have all year.

Gday...

Ricciardo pronounces his name "Ricardo" instead of the Italian pronunciation "Rit-char-do", saying that is how his family pronounces it.

Catriona. Catriona (pronounced similar to "Katrina", or sometimes phonetically) is a feminine given name in the English language. ... All are Goidelic forms of the English Katherine, which is possibly derived from an earlier Greek name, meaning "pure".

I really makes ya wonder jest wot pronunciation is wot when it comes to people's names. hmm

Cheers - John

How do you pronounce GHOTI ?

In enough GH is pronounced F
In women O is pronounced I
in motion TI is pronounced SH

So the correct pronunciation of GHOTI is FISH.

If you are travelling through Broken Hill and cross in to South Australia, the first town you come to is ****burn.  (Pronounced Coburn)

Badc0ck is pronounced Badco.
C0ck is often just pronounced Co.
Colquhoun is Ka Hoon.
The OH or OUGH on many English & Scottish names is not pronounced and subsequently dropped from the spelling to the extent they are often mistaken as Italian.
Coghill (COG-HILL) is pronounced coagill
Cahill is Kale, not CAR-HILL
and the list goes on.

I have a simple common County Durham surname and I always have to spell it out. Opposite for me - many spellings of same simple pronunciation.

Ah yes, the Italian double letter. We have mezzanine (as in mezzanine floor) that people pronounce as mezanine. Do you eat piza and if you do do you have mozarella cheese on it?
