Hi Scoota.

If you haven't booked already I doubt you will get a crossing in March. Use their online system to check. You also need to make your return booking at the same time.

Weather? We were there from December last year until Easter this year. Quite cold most of the time.

Great place to visit though.

Our best advise would be to do an overnight sailing on the ferry both ways. idea.gifidea.gif

We made the mistake of doing a day sailing going to Tassie, it was as boring as watching paint dry. yawn.gifyawn.gif

Same as Desert Dweller - the overnight trips are best.

Apart from the boredom, we had to leave Geelong in darkness to arrive at 7:30am. But worse was after arriving at Davenport - by the time we cleared quarantine it was full dark and it was difficult to locate the place we were booked into. With the overnight trip you arrive at the ferry in daylight and disembark in daylight.

Incidentally, nobody seems to mention quarantine. At Melbourne vehicles and vans are checked - even raising cars bonnets. Loose gas cylinders, particularly the butane canisters are confiscated as are any fruit and vegetables. But it is more thorough in Tassie - it seems to take an hour or so to process all vehicles.

When we were in Tassie some years back now, we really enjoyed the Penny farthing bike races in Evandale which is on 23rd February, 2019. (if you just happen to be there at that time of year). Cheers.

If you can change your booking to early/mid February and stay until after Easter. You are from Queensland, you will freeze after that. Book your return trip as a lot of people get caught as the northern migration is in full swing and you can get caught

And get a cabin. If you MUST travel overnight in seats, take your own blankets. It can get cold...

Thanks everyone so far who has contributed, we have today booked onto the spirit, overnight both ways as recommended leaving end of February and returning ending of May so we hope 3 months will be long enoug. I guess we can extend as we get closer to departure if need be. So any highlights from those who have visited Tassie will be welcomed, remembering we have dog. Cheers scoota

You won't regret doing the overnight sailings both ways.

After disembarking from a totally boring day sailing we had to drive in the dark from Devonport to Launceston Penny Royal Apartments near Cataract Gorge. We managed to get there just as reception was closing.

We took just our car & stayed in cabins/apartments for 22 days, 2 days at each location. Basically we did a full circle plus Cradle Mtn.

It was all pretty good except the Gordon River cruise which ''cost an arm & a leg'' for a very ordinary experience.

Probably wouldn't bother again, too much to see on the big island.
