Street parking in Brisbane - enforecement of Long Vehicle for large motorehomes

Apologies if this is the wrong forum.

I'd be interested to hear views and experience in regard to parking a motorhome on the street in Brisbane in front of your home.

According to Brisbane City Council regulations a vehicle longer than 7.5 metres is considered to be a long vehicle and "restricted from parking for longer than one hour within 100 metres of any residential land" (see https://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/traffic-transport/parking-permits/parking-rules/trucks-heavy-or-long-vehicles).

We have a motorhome at 7.9 m in length which we plan to park out the fornt of our house and wonder if BCC enforce this rule for motorhomes as well as commercial trucks as we may need to arrange storage otherwise.

Welcome to the gang Wolf, enjoy here and out in the playground.

If the BCC By Law is what you say, be very, very careful as they will book ya for sure. They will be no different to any other Council. If you don't have anywhere on your property to park it then you may did to find a friend or family member that could help out or you might even have to find a storage yard.

I hope it all works out for you.

Hello wolf, a very warm welcome. Do not know about the rules but you can park the motorhome for 10 months of the year at watson park, seventh  day convention centre, dakabin, just north of brisbane for about $8 a week. Site is locked up each night. Some showgrounds will allow this also but are a bit dearer.

Hi Wolf and welcome , we had the same problem with morton bay city council .We got away with it for about 12 weeks until someone complained

then we started getting nasty letters.

Finished up knocking part of the fence down and putting down a pad for the M/H and they can all go and get st@##ed.furiousfurious

I would be concerned about the insurance aspect, if someone happens to clip you and insurance can prove you were parked illegally! well you know the rest.

Hi Wolf, 

This is just not confined to Brisbane; it is also State Legislation and is covered by Reg. 200 TORUMS Legislation. It is also fairly universal throughout Australia with a few exceptions. Most Local Governments (councils) have complimentary by-laws at local level. 

The purpose of the legislation was "originally" to allow drivers of long vehicles to partake of a meal whilst in a built up area, hence the one hour limit. It has since been changed to include loading/unloading etc. It has been the law for a very long time and it is something that not everyone knows about. It is something that can be enforced by local government compliance at local government level under their by-laws and it is also an offence that can be enforced by Police under State Law. Hope this clarifies the situation. 

200Stopping on roadsheavy and long vehicles

(1)The driver of a heavy vehicle, or long vehicle, must not stop on a length of road that is not in a built-up area, except on the shoulder of the road.

 

Maximum penalty20 penalty units.

 

(2)Subject to subsections (2A) and (2B), the driver of a heavy vehicle, or long vehicle, must not stop on a length of road in a built-up area for longer than 1 hour, unless the driver is permitted to stop on the length of road for longer than 1 hour by information on or with a traffic control device.

 

Maximum penalty20 penalty units.

 

(2A)The driver of a heavy vehicle, or long vehicle, may stop on a length of road in a built-up area for longer than 1 hour if the driver is engaged in dropping off or picking up goods for all of the period when the vehicle is stopped.
(2B)Subsections (2) and (2A) apply unless a local law otherwise provides.
(3)In this section
heavy vehicle means a vehicle with a GVM of 4.5t or more.
long vehicle means a vehicle that, together with any load or projection, is 7.5m long, or longer.
road does not include a road-related area, but includes any shoulder of a road.

it should be noted that the discription of a "long vehicle" includes a caravan/tug combination..................
