No Cup Holiday here so the day is a bit flat. No matter where you are or what you are doing, I think it really does "stop the nation". Always stop what we are doing and watch. I used put $1 for a place on every horse. I'm really betting on an outsider to get a place. Guaranteed 3 dividends and with so much bet there is a good chance of getting my money back.
Our local holiday (Show Day) is Friday. Local Cup day is a Saturday.
I know that I am in the small minority of people in Australia who have zero interest in the Melbourne Cup or even horse racing for that matter. As far as I know the only place that ever got a PH was Victoria for the rest of us it was just another day at work. Before retiring I would participate in the odd office sweep but that was usually only to make up the numbers, someone would have to tell me if I actually won anything. Anyhow for those of you who are planning some sort of Melbourne Cup celebration enjoy your day - I'll probably see the result for the first time on the evening news.
There are a few never interested in the Cup and some who have to prove it...
As a Country Bank Manager we would always have our sweep among our Staff and gather in the lunch room to watch...
However:......there was without fail always some customer who would come in to the Bank to make a large deposit= much cash and many cheques to process
right at the start of the M/ Cup.....we would invariably poke the most unwilling Junior Teller out the lunchroom door to serve...lol..
Most likely a customer making a point of letting everyone know he/she was not interested in the Cup....the Streets of course were usually deserted....
I would remind the Staff: ' the Customer is not always right,..however the Customer always remains the Customer'...many business's today could adopt this attitude..

Hoo Roo
My first real job was in a country bank. Best time to jump the counter and rob the place? When all the staff were out back listening to the cup. Same with shoplifting.
