Watch for snakes@1 november 2018

The husky was eyeballing/stalking/'holding' a 5' Eastern Brown under the house this morning. Just what you need at 5.30 in the morning.

Dog is fine, snake is - NFI - crawl space too small to get under. Lots of escape/hiding points.

So just watch out folks, the buggers are about.

Yep, I saw a Tiger in Tumut down by the river a couple of weeks ago and browns seen every day by other people and 5 browns in one morning.

Yep, they are around. They are probably looking at me all the time where I am now but I haven't seen them yet. "THEY ARE OUT THERE".

Seems that I'm not the only one that likes shopping at ALDI,

Yesterday morning I was just leaving their car park in Wattle grove ( Perth )  when I spotted a Snake on the road crossing almost opposite the Shopping centre, kind of changed his outlook after being run over by the 4x4 !!!

This Aldi store is very new and previously was only a large, bush covered paddock, so one has to expect the local long term residents ( Snakes ) have some right to the area,  and they do say that.... "shopping at Aldi is different"  !!!

The weird thing is, everyone who has lived in this house/on this property says 'I've never seen a snake near the house'. In 10 months, we've seen 2!

You can buy snake repellers at Mitre 10.
Works for ground snakes but not much good for the climbers like tree and carpet snakes.

Had those at a place where we worked. Did nothing.

Best repellent ever was guinea fowl, but bugger me they are noisy!

I recall a story or part of it a woman was telling on vermin in her older farmhouse kitchen, an acquaintance told her to sprinkle flour over the floor and worktops upon retiring for the night. When she entered the kitchen in the morning there were snake trails all over the floor, didn't have to worry about the mice, just moved out for a while and called a snake catcher. I image a lot of carpentry went on after that.

In days past it was considered OK to cut 3/4 way around top of condensed milk tin push the top in to leave a gap around 10mm, use most of the milk for tea (or whatever) - then stand the can near front verandah - snake would stick head in can to get milk and would be unable to pull his head out as sharp edge of lid would catch and tighten - then use the tin for target practice with .22.
Strictly not PC now.

Pop and his mates used to do this 'in camp' when they were working. So did dad and his brothers and workmates. They all worked in the bush in Tassie felling timber.........

103 people presented to the Townsville Hospital last financial year, 106 the year before for snake bite.
A former work colleague died last year in his garden after being bitten by an Eatern Brown Snake.

I saw a "small" snake last Sunday on a rainforest walk at Paluma (80kms NW of Townsville) - it heard me coming & disappeared into the bush. What I saw was the end 60cm of it, possibly a tree snake as it was around 2.5cm in diameter.

It was reported that a large python attacked a toddler last week at Julatten a couple of weeks ago - see www.abc.net.au/news/2018-10-20/queensland-family-saves-toddler-from-pythons-jaws/10400156 .

Be careful!
