Just thought I'd post our rig that we are traveling around Australia in. We started from Mandurah, WA at the end of Aug. and are now at Wilpena Pound in SA, having clocked 5000kms. She is a German build Hymer on a Mercedes chassis and is 28 years old, we used to drive her - minus Suzuki - round Europe but a couple of years ago age and money made us decide to bring her home to WA. So after nearly 2 years of conversion to Aus. requirements and renovation we hit the road, don't travel very fast but not in a hurry. Give us a wave if you see us, fairly distinctive set up as only 3 or 4 in Australia
Back in the day we used to see the occasional Hymer travelling around the UK. They were so different from the offerings in the UK they stuck out like sore thumbs.
They actually looked like they were purpose designed in comparison to the home grown efforts which looked like converted Milk Floats.
I will have to say though I have never seen a Hymer other than that beige colour.
We are members of a Facebook group called Classic Hymers and they have 4700 members, mostly in the UK but all over Europe and 2 in Australia. So Hymers like these are now quite a common sight in the UK.
Thanks, yes the lack of access on the kerb side was a slight problem when I went to get her Australian certified but was allowed by the WA DOT chief engineer. Just have to remember to go on a site the 'other way round' to get the door in the right direction!! Otherwise had no problems and after driving in the UK not had any LHD trouble here.
Hymers up to 1988 were a dark brown trim, christened "Brownies", after 1988 to 1995 were a lighter beige colour, like ours. then grey came in as well as blue for the trim.
