Sat Nav & reversing camera

Hi Everyone

I want to purchase a new Sat Nav/GPS dash mounted unit (Garmin/Tom Tom etc) but with a reverse camera. Current GPS unit is cool but the recently purchased 2010 Prado really should have a reverse camera. Any suggestions? Any recommendations re unit to purchase?

I use a Garmin 5" truckies GPS, it does have an input for a camera, which I think would be a very good idea to use, instead of buying a separate monitor/camera which clutters up the dash. However if you are computer savey, and use a laptop on your travels, Garmin have a program called "Bushcamp" which is free to Garmin users. It allows you to compose your trip on the computer, add in extra details as required. It has the same map as installed on the GPS so lets you find those places like rest stops etc.

When you have finished your trip, you can up-load it to the GPS. You can also print out a hard copy of the itinery, which will list destinations, distances to next stop, arrival times, total travel distance etc. I use the program and it is quite good to use, just takes a bit of learning to understand all the different things it can do.

I believe Navman has a reversing camera accessory that's compatible with one of their GPS models and sold separately. Not sure if it's wireless or wired. Haven't heard of any others.

This mob are good, some good products and decent prices.

I used their  version in my 2006 Prius for four years. Never missed a beat.

When you say dash mount did you mean in place of the IN Dash mounted unit.. They do specific versions for various Toyota models as well. You would have to check with them.

I did have a Navman GPS/Dashcam version with facility for an extra camera. Went back for repair/replacement six times before I got a separate camera and GPS in place of it. Even the replacement has had problems with the touch screen getting out of sync.

Maybe I have been unlucky with Navman but the Garmin Nuvi I passed to my daughter is still going strong (5 Years)  as is the one I gave my son (3 years)

Just installed a Garmin Drivesmart L61 / BC30 camera. Bought as a set at johnny appleseed gps
My vehicle (Ranger) has an inbuilt GPS that is lacking and only reversing sensors.
Went for the Garmin as I have a Garmin Zumo on my bike. I could just transfer all my info between devices and plan everything sitting at my PC. Had a NUVI is each car when GPS was optional.
I had to put a bright spot on my van hitch so I can now hitch up unaided.

Hey LLD,

are you happy with the BC30 camera. I'm still thinking about getting one for mine.

Had no choice but not happy where I had to mount it. It's on the rego plate on the Ranger and subsequently the vision can be a little dull. I think there are adjustments to fix that. Need to RTFM.

My wife's car has an inbuilt camera and also on top of the rego plate which is quite high. Her camera is brilliant.

On Banggood I have just bought a Junsun GPS and reversing camera ($110), but had to purchase the Australian Maps (Gumtree - another $20), but works a treat. It is a 7" diag screen and has all the features of my old GPS. Got fedup with the wireless camera I had installed some years ago - wouldn't install another one!

Thanks everyone for the very relevant information. So, here's the development:

Lots of important considerations to ponder when purchasing a new Sat Nav/GPS unit. Well worth the effort

But ......

Wireless is still a 'work in progress' Reverse camera should be wired. Unfortunately this means I get 2 screens on my dash. Bugger. Wanted to avoid this. Suppose new cars with inbuilt GPS solves this problem but many voices unhappy with standard of built in units.

So .....

Keeping trusty Garmin unit which has been a true friend and getting mechanic to wire me up with a reverse camera. Not sure which (trust his judgement, has done a few)

Hi Alan, my installation of a clip on mirror reversing camera on link below

chrisanddiannesultimaadventure.wordpress.com/my-rig/2014-iveco-50c21/rear-view-and-reversing-cameras/

I am very impressed with picture quality, although reversing camera on van is a little high, but ideal for rear view camera

I have added my in dash installation which has an inbuilt GPS all running on an Android system.

I personally think android is the best system for anything that shares information across different apps
