So for say a Toyota coaster, at just short of 7m, or a similarly sized cargo van, do these fall under the category of long vehicles? Can they be parked on the side of the road (absent signage otherwise)?
A coaster can be parked on the side of the road anywhere unless the local signage says otherwise, ie angle parking is often less than 6m. I drove a coaster in Sydney for years and locals would often complain about it being parked in the street but the parking cops couldn't do anything unless I overstayed the actual time limits in some streets.
I borrowed an F350 dual cab on several occasion. In a car-park I needed 4 spots (2 wide, 2 deep) even if I could get in. Loved driving it but it was HUUUGGGGEEEEE.
Mark, if you get or have a 'long' vehicle and in a car park, go to the back area and take what bays you need to be safe. Works for me. I have a Colorado with Clearview mirrors and sometimes bays are still tight even with mirrors folded in so for protection of the Collie mostly I park down the back and take two spots. I park over the line.
I have never had anyone complain.
The walk to the shop entrance is getting harder though

I have a Sprinter which is 'about' 6M long. I will/have parked it anywhere on the side of the road out of the cities, without worry or problems. In the cities or large towns I am aware of parking signs and markings but do what seems reasonable. For angle parking it is problematical but If i park rear to curb and can hang over the kerb it is OK. Otherwise I keep looking. 6M is the NSW limit for 'normal' vehicles, and restrictions on general parking apply only to HEAVY Vehicles.
Country towns no problems anyway. Nation parks etc with marked bays might be tight sometimes but generally a bit generous somewhere(the futherest away). I have had a couple of other small buses previously and never had any problems finding a park out of the city. Never been booked and usually free camp. Even in Sydney sometimes (Glebe !)

From NSW regs:
Standing and parking
Heavy vehicles (4.5 tonnes or more GVM) or long vehicles (7.5 metres or longer) must not stop on a length of road outside a built up area, except on the shoulder of the road. In a built up area they must not stop on a length of road for longer than one hour (buses excepted).

Yes common sense ! Wouldnt want to park or stop unless you have to in any vehicle these days . Weight and length comes into it . I have 8m motorhome . Never had an issue parking . If you park in out of the way places . Even across places like Bunnings . Often park so I have access to door . If I park in normal position! Often its too tight for door access !! Out on the road . I just pull up off the road . Checking soil first
I plan on making this thing my daily driver so I will probably have to get used to that long walk (and possibly public transport). It sounds as though 7.5m is the standard though I'm not sure if it varies by state, or if that rule is even really enforced. Good to hear no one has had any troubles with it. I guess that does open up the possibility of buying a Coaster (as it would live on the road), though I still like the idea of looking like an innocent "little" cargo van.
How do you go with busy season touristy spots? I'm thinking about heading to the Great Ocean Road just after new year, possibly with said van if I have figured out what I want by then. Do you find it possible to get a park at all the attractions along the way?
These regulations became obsolete on the repeal of Pt XXIIA of the Local Government Act 1934 on 1.12.1999
It then lists some old legislation, including your linked one, that have been revoked. It loooks like you have dredged up some ancient history that is no longer in force.

Mark. The Great Ocean Road parking should be okay, attraction and towns. Its generally full of vans and campers. The road itself has turnout lanes so if you are holding up traffic you are expected to pull over and let all the boy-racers go by.
