I have just received a call from mobile number 0421 886 293. When I answered there was a pause and a foreign male claiming to be named Thomas informed me that I had been involved in an accident and he was working for a financial institution (unnamed) and was seeking damages from me.
Of course, I did not fall for this scam and I began to challenge the veracity of his statements. He was adamant that he was correct, until I told him that I had recorded his mobile number (which is just a call forwarding service) and was about to call the Police, upon which he abruptly hung up.
I also had informed him that I had previously worked in law enforcement and am currently a Justice of the Peace (which I am) and he was quite unhappy about that as well. These crooks do not like being called crooks nor do they like having their bluff called.

Hey Dave a quick warning, I know someone that did exactly what you done and in the end he had to change his mob # , he literally received call after call for weeks on end until it drove him to cancel the # , when he did answer he was given a barrage of abuse towards him and his family . I just hang up the moment I hear a slightest foreign accent . Never had a call back yet.

R these calls coming to landline phones or mobiles? I do not get any N have a mobile. But then,i do not put my phone number on any competitions.
Watch out for any calls from people that ring a couple of times and hang up. This is the latest scam.
When you ring back to find out who it was, they try to keep you on the line because the number is one of those that you are getting charged on time at an exorbitant rate. People have been scammed for hundreds.
Particularly true with overseas numbers.
I have tried and tried to get message bank taken off my phone to no avail despite contacting Boost directly. I never ring 101 to get messages. If it's important people will ring again till they catch you. Why should I pay to retrieve messages for missed calls. Just a rip off.
The calls I have received have been on my mobile. Having not entered any competitions, I suspect the scammers got my number from hacking Pageuppeople who are a job application website. I had not applied for any jobs through them for over a year, and especially since I retired, but the site was hacked and application histories stolen going back up to six years ago. So, I suspect this is where these have come from. I have only had a couple of these calls on my mobile, but will wait and see what happens now.
I have a strategy in place for the next scammer to try that one on me!

We only have mobiles, no landline. What we do to keep safe:
1. Never answer a call if I don't recognise the number, or caller is not in my contacts list. If genuine they will leave a message
2. Never, ever, answer a 'private number' or 'number undisclosed' call. Why would they hide? If genuine they will leave a message
3. Never dial a 'missed call' number when no message has been left. If genuine they will call back or leave a message
4. I add any annoyance numbers to my blocked numbers list
No problem or cost for retrieving messages, it's an unlimited service on our plans.

And I have notices an increase in scam calls coming from mobile numbers now. Used to be only from land line numbers (or silly numbers). Makes the decision to answer harder (Ie I know no-one in NSW so will not answer 02 .... Numbers). They are getting more cunning in more and more ways.
