What is the road like from Narrabri to Grafton or Ballina?

We are looking at driving from Narrabri and going to Gold coast via Grafton or Ballina.

What are the roads like to tow a van?

 Go to Grafton, Casino to Ballina, to miss all the road works on the Pacific Highway.  Ballina south their is a lot of 40, 70 and 80 km/h zones.
