Upgrading a bed from double to Queen Size

Hi,

We have been looking for a van to buy & have found that most of the ones that fit our budget possess a "Queen Size" bed that is much narrower than a regular one, so my questions are:-

Has anyone "ripped out" the wardrobes and built in a full queen- size bed?

Is it a DIY project?

What lurks behind that I may have issues with?

Ian,
I see no-one has answered your query. Removing the wardrobes may impede you being able the "make the bed" and it will impact on your resale value if you want to sell the van one day.

After having a camper with a QS bed in the front (E-W layout), we went to a van with single beds. No more crawling over the wife in the middle of the night to go to the loo (if one got up, it was better that both of us went), no more disturbing one another if one wanted to read late & no more fighting over the bed clothes - "you pinched all the blankets & I had none"!

If you buy one I'd suggest you keep the van as is.

In most vans these days a queen bed is 6'2" x 5' which is the standard width but length is shortened.

Not sure what my bed measurements are but I'm only 5'4 and unless I stick my head against the back of the van, I'm hanging over the foot of the bed.
I'm considering a longer matress and extending the base to fit it.
So you're not alone but I can't point you to anything to help I'm afraid.
As W&P said though, it's best to get something that works for you out of the box as changes can impact you at resale.
If you get a cheapie though, have at it, because it can't impact that much to be worth worrying about.

A piece of foam cut and put at the pillow end between the bed and wall will lengthen the mattress.

What is it with penny pinching caravan manufacturers.
In what universe is a queen sized bed only 6'2" long?
And sticking a 6inch bolster at the head of a 5'8" mattress gives you some more daytime floor space but it still only makes 6'2".

A real queen mattress is 5'0" x 6'8" (153 cm x 203 cm)

Most caravans manufacturers will try and tell you their vans come with a queen sized mattress. NO THEY DONT!

If your van has an extendable slat base designed to accommodate a bolster, just get a custom made 6'8" caravan mattress and sacrifice 6" of floor space.
They really aren't expensive, only a couple of hundred dollars with angled corners at the feet end.

Van mattresses are made to be light weight and don't have a lot of padding but a $100 Sheridan topper soon fixes that.
