Ballina to Noosa bypassing Brisbane

Hi,

Can anyone suggest a good route to bypass Brisbane in our Motorhome. I dont mind if it means there is an overnight [or even 2] stop somewhere halfway behind a pub, rest stop or Caravan Park. I just want to avoid as many roads around Brisbane as possible ??

Probably not what you are after, but the easiest way is to stick on Hwy 1. It doesn't go through Brissy - it stays out near the airport and is at least a 4 lane divided road all the way. Not very scenic driving, but it will get you there quickly. You have to pay a toll to go over the Gateway bridge over the Brisbane River on the hwy, that is the only downer.

Thanks, but we always have loads of time and never need to get anywhere fast. That route is full of traffic and usually traffic jams, and horrible. The scenic routes always suit us even if it takes a lot long with overnight stays etc.

It's a long way round but you could head west to Casino then through Kyogle (beautiful country) to Warwick, then through Toowoomba turn right at Hampton to Esk, then past Somerset Dam to Kilcoy, then to Peachester, Beerwah and the Sunshine Coast. Plenty of free camping along the way - the free camp at Kilcoy even has some power points. If you don't like winding  roads, the route from Casino to Tenterfield is better, but longer. The road past Somerset Dam is also narrow, so you could go north from Hampton to Yarraman, then the D'Aguilar highway to Kilcoy. All of this is absolutely beautiful country and not too much traffic. Choose and enjoy! Bula

I agree with Bula. If you don't want the Pacific Highway and Bruce Highway, then the two alternatives suggested by Bula are the best.

I also agree with Bula, except that once past Kilcoy, turn left onto the Kilkoy-Beerwah Rd, then up the Steve Irwin way until you hit the Bruce Hwy near Caloundra. Very nice drive, but a but winding in places.

If you go Bullas' way, there is a great free camp at Allora. Kyogle show grounds is good. There's also a low cost camp at Woodenbong. Can't blame you for wanting to avoid Bris. I'll kill a couple of days to avoid capital citys. Cheers Pete

Agree with this route, we use it often. The showground at Clifton has 10amp power and is a good overnighter with an easy walk to a pub meal in town. It is worth the little detour between Warwick  & Toowoomba, left turn near Sandys Creek. We like Esk CP as well. The Somerset Dam road is narrow but the views are excellent. Cheers,

What an absolutely wonderful and amazing detailed reply. Thanks so much. I live in Ballina and have 9 grandchildren living in Tewantin, and have time to spare to take such a lovely route to see them all....

Warwick, head towards toowoomba. pass the clifton turnoff  and keep going a little bit, not far,  then turn right (zoo turnoff) and drive that road to gatton. We have 25 foot caravan and have driven it a few times. Then toogoolowah, kilcoy, head towards woodford turn left  on beerwah rd. (Bout 4kls. Before woodford) , Maleny down to the bruce highway. Beautiful scenic drive. Enjoy.

The road from Woodenbong to  Killarney is not the best, roughest road in Australia. Much better to go Casino to Tenterfield.

Then from Toowoomba go to Gatton to Esk, much better road than going Hampton to Esk.

There are many different ways. I invested in a Hema Road Atlas a few years back, as well as Hema Regional Maps. Invaluable.
