We are recent retirees that have been gifted a 2004 Jayco Heritage (26' and weighing in at 2950 fully laden) our tug is a 2004 Jeep GC Diesel 8 speed, we are all set up and adjusted with our WDH, Red Arc brake controller etc and having done a few trial runs we feel quite comfortable with the rig. We are heading off next week from Bendigo for sunny climes taking about four weeks to get to Hervey Bay with a few stops along the way. My question is which way would be most suitable for a lesser experienced driver to go from Canberra to Blackheath in the Blue Mountains in the one day. There appears to be 2 main choices 1/- via Federal Hway, Taralga Road, Abercrombie Rd etc or 2/- M31 to outskirts Sydney, then M7, M4 and A32. My gut feeling is telling me option 2 as option 1 may be too windy and/or confronting, but would like to hear from others as to their recommendations.
Option one is ok until near the Abercrombie river where you will have a couple of sharpish bends and some steep but even pulls narrowish road compared to Highway option but quite doable in your set up.
Before you get to Goulburn there is a wonderful little township at Gunning well worth the detour (especially the cake shop). They also have a brilliant free camp with showers and toilets.
