suitable tow vehicle and tow bar


Hi All

Just starting out getting a caravan I have a November plated 2011 VW Touareg v6 180 kw  looking at  getting our first van one we are looking at getting is 20ft6 with a ATM 3300kg would the Touareg be suitable, and is it legal to fit a non genuine tow bar as I am looking at swapping out the tow bar as the factory fitted tow bar has a vertical tow bar tongue which I have no adjustment for the ball height   need one that is horizontal looking at the Hayman Reece tow bare be thank full for any information,

According to VW 3.5T with max ball weight of 280kg. Generally we in Aus recommend 10% ball weight but that is open to question as well. Says only with genuine VW bar. Sure that HR will give you max weights if you check with them. Supposidly good tow mules with better fuel economy that just about anything else that can "legally" tow 3.5T

Indeed, the Euro hook-style ball is a nuisance for not being height adjustable. HR (and other towbar specialists) will almost certainly have a standard version bar for the Toureg.

Over and above that, be sure to calculate all your weights carefully. With a van of 3.3t (assuming you max out it's ATM) you'd be extremely close to the limit, so it's important to know what your rated GCM is for the Toureg (car & van combined). You may not have a lot of room left for car payload. Just in case it helps you, this is a pretty good reference:
