Why can't you just call it the Illawarra Highway instead of a number that few know of? We should not have to look those things up to answer your questions.
The road is suitable for any vehicle that is not overloaded. Semi-trailers use it so you should fit up there. There is however there is a short section around a bend that is so narrow that the road looses its centre line. You just have to approach that cautiously. Call on your CB CH 40 as you approach it. Trucks give way to other large vehicles that are already negotiating that section. Just don't try the Jamberoo road.

The section of the road mentioned by PeterD where there is no center line is actually a very tight corner where trucks and buses have to back up to get around. That also applies to long caravans!
If you are worried about that then you could go up Mount Ousley, take the Picton exit at the top, then the Hume Highway and exit at the Illawara Highway to Moss Vale. Twice as long as Macquarie Pass but easier.
(For those who have never been that way Mt Ousley is SIX lanes wide, almost straight with a 80km/h speed limit both ways.)
Jamberoo Road has a warning sign 'Not suitable for Caravans' anyway.
