ATM

hi guys nearly made a bad mistake (Not checking on my behalf,)

We just got some work done so we can have our car another 10 yrs, spent $6k on my 1992 80s series turbo diesel Land cruiser to get the Paint here and there & polish to get all the scratches out, new shockers, fuel pump, injectors etc etc. getting ready to buy a van and travel, we thought we had done our homework & research, we looked at some nice vans and had our short list.

while looking at a few Vans in Noels Caravans in S.A. the owner Noel asked us what car we are towing with.!!! Told him the 80's series, he mentioned about the ATM of the van we were in at the time, and mentioned that we would end up raising this by the time we loaded it up.

I thought yeah no problems the car weighs around 3 ton so we should be Ok.

so when we got home I called the RAA, and they told me that it could only tow a caravan no heavier than the ATM : 2270. then the RAA started to waffle on about Ball weight,

I do recall seeing an article on the forum, about GVM and ATM etc, can some one please point out where it is so I can get all the details before we purchase a van we cannot tow.

Cheers, all help would be appreciated

Salt.

Towing for the 1992 80 series is 2500 kg ATM.
In 1996 it went up to 3500 kg.
Need to also check on what towbar you have as some were not rated very high.
Your choices are
1. get a towing upgrade.
2. get a new vehicle
3. get a van that has ATM of less than 2500 kg.

We were in the same boat a few months ago. The ATM on our van is only 1700 kg but we were close or over so needed to put more in the car.
The gross weight for the 80 series is 2960 kg and we were on the limit there.
We finished up changing cars to a Mazda BT50

There are several sources/websites with this info. including this one I found a while ago:

www.caravandealer.com.au/things-to-know/weights-masses-and-payload-weights

And yes, your ball weight, along with ATM, GVM & GCM are essential to get right.

My information from the Vehicle Towing Mass Guide page 102 indicates that only the  a Series 80 with a pintle hook could tow 2500 kg. If it is fitted with a 50 mm ball then it is limited to 2270 kg.

Yes you are correct from that document from RACQ and the caravan industry. It does say " this is a guide only and should be checked against motor vehicle manufacturer specs"

Who do you believe, RACQ/Caravan industry or Toyota?

I have never heard of a pintle hook, and took my info from info on LCOOL and from the red book guide.

I had my 80 series for 12 years and this is the first time I have ever heard of this limit of 2270 kg.

I have sold the car now, but I am pretty sure it had 2500 kg in the documentation with the car.

The RACQ and the caravan industry get their info straight from the importers of the vehicles, ie the Toyota representatives in Oz. As you said, consult the Toyota reps. If you talk to the local agents they will probably tell you the towing figures for the later models.

Pintle hook.

Colin Young at Caravan Council of Australia has produced some information Bulletins that are free to download at www.caravancouncil.com.au/ for all caravan requirements and specifications.
