I know you can pay people to drive your caravan from A to B, but I'm wondering if people ever do it for free - as a trip? Given plenty of time and use of the caravan would it be an attractive proposition? Lets say 2-3 weeks Perth to Melbourne (or whatever).
I'm looking at a caravan in Perth (to buy). I'm in Tassie and would use it to go up north (Qld) so could meet the 'trippers' in or near Melbourne. It's a long way to go for me to go and get it, though that could be my holiday this year. Just not as warm as I was thinking
It's done for campervan rental companies. Problem with what I'm thinking is they'd be stuck in Melbourne without a van for the return, but maybe they could just whip back quickly.
I wouldn't let anyone tow my van across Australia. Anything could happen.
I am presently up north and put my car and van in undercover, inside storage for a few months. It is really cheap for what you get.
Unless you were using your van in Tassie you could do the same and save on costs of the boat trip.
Question is the van going to be fully equiped IE water hoses sullage hose 15 power chairs table ect ect .
Now I believe what you ask could be possible plenty of people go east to collect there vans from Melbourne I looked at that myself but didn,t have the room in the car to take all the stuff necessary to run the new van and having it didn,t want to buy it all again . So having a van to carry all the gear would have been advantagous .Maybe a phone call ,Email to some of the Perth new van dealers might get you a contact of someone willing to do the trip and collect their new van at trhe same time .
One possibility is someone heading from Perth to pick up a van from the East... but the previously mentioned cautions and questions remain. It's a lot of money to place in someone's custody when not geared up for it as a commercial entity.
Cheers, Steve
Pretty much decided if I did go for that one I'd drive over and get it (about $825 in fuel all up). Just consider it a not quite so warm holiday instead of going further north. However the layout of that one over another I've seen in Melbourne isn't that much better.
Looked at storing a van on the mainland instead of bringing it back here, but cost of storage is about the same or more than the ferry so no advantage and no use of it here for summer. Also I could maintain it if I keep it at home.

Hi. If there turns out to be a problem with the van, how do u know if it was like that on purchase or damaged on the way over? Insurance also, how do u know if the person doing the towing is able to b insured under your policy. Even if he says all is good, u won't know that until he has an accident n u get denied coverage or accepted. Just saying.
Another option is that there is a lot of trucks that return from Perth or the west in general with little to no return load.
If you take advantage of this it may be a cheap way to get your van to Melbourne.
Having said that if it were me I would want to see the van prior to trusting it to anyone for towing or for transport.
I wouldnt be to concerned about the weather at this time of the year....usually quite pleasant and reasonably predictable.
Good luck
