Working and ABN's

Hi everyone, hope you're all in a warmer, less windy spot than we are at home today, lol.. (Wimmera, Vic.)

Hoping to hit the road soon-ish, hubby (54yo) and I (49yo) are planning on working our way around, between us we have a huge range of skills and experience, wondering if getting an ABN would be worthwhile? Do most places still put you on the books or do they prefer ABN's if you are only staying for a short while?

Will obviously run it past our accountant but wondering more about what people are finding employers prefer, and if it's even worth considering at all..

Thanks, and have a great day! :)

abn, whitecard, responable service of alcohol, hr licence, forklift licence, cert 3 in agecare or disability. That lot will find you work most places.

have worked in WA and QLD since 2012- all farm jobs and never needed an ABN (and no they were not cash jobs- happy to pay tax as we got it back)

Availability and ease of gaining an ABN varies often and regularly, just a keeping one once it has been.granted.Strictly speaking you must meet stringent conditions to be granted an ABN and meet those conditions to retain your ABN. You probably don't need one but if you get one, realize they do come with mandatory provisions.

Ask your acct , I'm not positive but if you have an abn now you have to submit a bas return each quarter  , if you know your not going to be working you can have it put on hold.If you dont hold an abn the employer must hold the top rate of tax and MC levy.

Not so - you just need to fill out a tax declaration form (available on line)  and then you will be taxed at the normal rate not the top rate. It all really depends on the type of work you do, plenty of casual farm jobs around that do not require an ABN.

ABN optional if seeking casual work, only needed if you want to declare yourself to the ATO as self employed, only essential if you want to invoice clients, if you a self employed without an ABN then your customer may withhold tax but I understand that is unlikely for casual work
