Caravan Insurance

Wow things are really starting to move forward, i have bought my van and have just changed the rego into my name. I organised comprehensive insurance with NRMA but when I asked about contents I was told they only give $1000 with the policy which does not include lap top or anything not physically attached to the van.eg camping gear etc. Since I won't have a home and no contents insurance how do I go about insuring all the sundry things I will need to take. Any help welcome. Gam.

Hi,

I changed insurance provider for that reason, NRMA didn't insure any more than $1000, I had told them that should something happen that $1000 wouldn't be sufficient to even replace our Generator for example, the person at other end of phone couldn't get that ??? You need to shop around.

In our experience you can nominate your own figure for the contents of your caravan, that's with GIO & RACV.

$1000 comes automatically with the van policy & can be increased to whatever you like.

Change insurance companies often, otherwise they'll price gouge you on renewals if you remain with the same company every year.

In the industry it's called ''a lazy mans tax''. We changed ours again this year & saved heaps on the renewal figure.

The same thing applies to all types of insurance.

We love the Great Crested Grebe image in your avatar by the way.smilesmile

We have taken separate contents cover with NRMA. Big advantage is that they actually and promptly pay claims. Our previous van was stolen a few years ago and NRMA paid on the van and contents within two weeks... You'd be surprised how much your contents are. We asked for $4500 cover but added it all up for the claim to well over $5000. NRMA paid out the full value of $4500 cover without a problem.

Just had a no blame claim on our town car finalised by NRMA.

Couldn't be more pleased.

Excellent service, great quality & extremely organised repairer, perfect repair job & they even detailed the car inside & out.  Hasn't looked that good since new.

I declined a free hire car with no excess insurance and free taxis from & to the repairer.

They'll be high on the list when the van insurance is due.

I have found by comparing and then going back to original insurer and actually speaking to a person, based in Australia, you can usually get the best deal. And get some history and continuity which can help in a worst case scenario. This can take a little time and may not be easy for those on the road full time. cheers Craig
