The road to Lark Quarry should be ok for anyone as long as it hasn't been raining heavily. The last 65k is unsealed but its a reasonable gravel road. If its been raining at all before you get there I would check locally the actual conditions.

Years ago we had intention of heading to Lark Quarry, got to Opalton and decided to camp a couple of days, have a look around.

Sat before a good fire first night, after a delightfully pleasant day, fossicking, meeting some locals, and finding there was a sort of market next day with fresh vegies etc. So glad we stayed.

However, 6am next morning, woke to cloudy, overcast sky, just as two passenger jets flew over - it was as of they had turned a tap on!!! The rain came out of the sky in a continuous downpour, we stayed in bed a bit longer, then decided to move on, back to Winton. The rain kept coming down, we were in a camper trailer, so tarp on the bed, put it down carefully.

Headed out onto the road, which was incredibly slippery, 4wd all the way, very steady speed - slow - the slightest skid would have us stuck in black mud!

Got back to Winton to find everything chokkas - caravan parks, behind the pub etc. Ended up getting the second last room in the RSL Motel - some guys came in the same way we did, bit too fast I thiknk - the slid off the road three times, car and them covered in mud.

Bonus was The Platters were playing at the club that night, so had dinner with them, and watched the show. Of course, it stopped raining by next day!

Lark Quarry is 110k from Winton Qld.   Its where the Dinosaur Stampede National Monument with dinosaur footprints is.

The road still has 65k of gravel, it was more than that when we first went back when it first opened.

Winton to Lark Quarry is driveable by any vehicle. I've done it 4 times in the last 10yrs. Prius, Tribute x 2, Hilux. All heavily loaded with passengers and cargo. ILarl Quarry is a must do and there is plenty to see along the way.

If you get a chance while looking at Lark quarry, go to Old Cork station on the Diamantina river. Ruins of the old station that spawned the song"Diamantina drver". lots of wild pigs, and fish , when I was there. Well worth a look. Bill

Keep an eye on road conditions. There is a lot of water moving SW from the recent heavy rain in Queensland and many roads are closed or damaged from flood waters at the moment.

But things change rapidly, so it might be all OK again very soon, and being early after rain or flooding can be the best time to be out there.

Cheers,

Peter
